I am starting this thread to allow people with no experience to get some insight into all their photo editing options. Please refrain from asking questins!
Post your experiences with various software here.
I started out learning on Adobe Photoshop 3.0, lol. I have CS3 now. Ya'll should look at those tutorials, they seem to be very helpful. If your starting out you have to get familiar with all the tools and what they can do, it just takes time.

just use the lasso tool for this. You have to "draw" an outline around the truck and then copy and paste into the other pic. You should have both pics open at the same time.
I have Photoshop CS3, Macromedia Fireworks, GIMP 2, and Photoimpression. I use Fireworks most of the time since I was taught that in school, I'm most familiar with it. I use photoshop occasionally for things fireworks isn't as good at, like cars in motion and stuff, but I'm still learning. GIMP has really nice text effects like flames like this:
And photoimpression came with one of my digital camera's and just has some goofy filters that can sometimes be fun.
Though I have to say for image creation for web design I like Fireworks hands down.
There are tons of 3rd party plug-ins that you can use in photoshop like that. I used to do all that "manually" now everything is automated. It's been a while since I've really done any photo editing like all this. I love this new forum.
Is Fireworks just photo editing or is it like a web page builder?
Windows Explorer with Microsoft RAW Viewer for browsing
I can't believe I didn't know about this until now. Anyway, I just downloaded one from Canon and it works great (MS didn’t have one for Vista, or at least I couldn’t find it)

Fireworks works in conjunction with Dreamweaver which is a web page designer/ web site builder and organizer, so many of the features on it are direct plugins for Dreamweaver, like hotspots for links over images, etc.
I've had experience with Macromedia Fireworks, Adobe Photoshop CS2 and CS3.
I personally prefer photoshop over FW because I'm more familiar with it. With that being said, particularly anything you're familiar with you're probably good at. I started learning how to use photoshop in 8th grade (Technology class) and we were on CS2. Photo editing was new and so cool to me! I learned about blending/cropping/lasso tool/filters/etc. I picked up photoshop again my 9th grade year on my own personal computer and just started finding tutorials, having a lot of patience, and my artwork would just show for itself in the final result.
When i used FW, it seemed to lack some of the features in which PS had, however, I primarily just lacked the knowledge of how to use it.
Start with what you think is best for you, because i can't tell you which one is better as they and many other advanced editing programs have their pro's and con's but what i would recommend is Adobe Photoshop. Try it out, see if you like it. The trial version gives you thirty days to do whatever go spoil yourself if you haven't already!

That's good to know, I have Dreamweaver, but I've never used it. My experience is with printed media - newspapers, magazines... I don't know anything about building web pages.
Oh, btw where did you get that pixelated maxima in your sig?

I started out on Elements, and to me it was just horrible. Upgraded right away to Photoshop 7.0, learned pretty much everything I know there. Then upgraded to CS2, never felt the need to upgrade to 3. 2 does pretty much everything you would need to do. Right now I'm on nothing =( I had my Photoshop for my PC, and I just upgraded to Mac so I need a new copy now, I'm most likely just gonna stick with CS2.
