i kinda like it, reminds me of the Genesis a little. i think Toyota needs to bring something like this with a turbo, or even a twin turbo. Similar to the supra, but to compete with the GTR for the "import class."

Hate it, looks like a fkn Mazda RX8. They need to stop thinking about redoing old cars (like Nissans 240z and now this AE86) and just make some new stuff. They need to start pumping out RWD Turbo/Twin Turbo stuff, new stuff not remakes of older cars. Especially Toyota, theyve been making alot of FF econocrap lately, and theyre suffering because of it
Nissan is at least still pumping the 370z and R35

bring the rear windshield forward, move the engine to the back and market it as the new MR2, the front resembles the last gen anyway.

You mean completely resign a near production model car?

+1000, bring back the MR2. Theres lots of cars that still could be reproduced that were cut off within the decade, like the Supra, RX7, MR2, Silvia, etc.
i just feel they need to leave good things like the AE86, 240z, etc. as the good things they were, not revamp them after all these years. the cars that were cut out in the decade could easily be redone

wow, I actually love this! With the exception of the wheels and the interior, though I doubt that interior will make it to the production model.

Bad idea. They were cool for their time (and still are as used cars) but their chassis/engine/suspension are all way outdated now.
Toy should have paired up with Honda and put the RDX motor into that.
and I agree with Josh...I think should be sold a subie here.
oddly enough, there is alot of argument from the subie forums about how alot of subie drivers don't want it coming as a subie...something about diluting the AWD image or something lame like that.
I personally think it would fill a good niche that Subaru is lacking - a performance/motorsports car that isn't AWD.....since let's be honest, AWD is really only useful in snow climates (which is why the highest proportion of subies are sold in Colorado compared to other cars)....

Wow. I really like it. It's more sporty than I was expecting. Maybe I missed it, but it's a 2+2, right? It has some GTR in the roofline, DB9 in the head-on view, some G coupe here and there. IMO, the styling is mostly it's own. I'm impressed. Put a high revving (7500rpm) 220hp+ motor in it and I'm interested. It's basically like an RX8 with some torque, no oil burning issues, or hibeous MPGs. I like HP, but the more I do auto-x, the less I care about raw straightline power and more about the overall package. It's good to see Toyota getting back in the sportscar game and Subaru trying something really different. I'll take mine in white and anthracite wheels.

Agreed, besides the RWD will do nothing of the sort, this will just help put subie out on the map in other parts of the country. Subie's are a bit hard to find in Florida (there are dealers but very few).
The other thing is I can't see toyota selling it here for many reason's one being, they already have way too many cars in the lineup and the boxer engine really is only a Subie thing. But I have no influence in that decision so it will be interesting to see what it is when it arrives on the US shores.
I'll put it this way, for some reason I'm turned off by it if it comes over as a Toyota but if its a Subie, then it becomes a must have.

The Toyota FT-86 concept is the fruit of cooperation between Toyota Motor Company and Subaru, and as such will wear a common chassis and some degree of engine commonality, at the least a 2.0 liter, four cylinder boxer engine dubbed the "C-45 Boxer" and making between 200 and 250 HP will power the rear wheels through a manual six speed transmission, and get this — no hybrid system. Saints be praised.
I'm feeling the leather dash. Definitely one of kind (for now) I am not a huge fan of Subaru and their "boxers" just hope its not the same engine; but a Toyota built boxer piston set up. Lots of potential.
I was seriously considering getting a Genesis turbo 4 next year (keeping the Max, of course), after all the kinks are worked out, or when there's an actual market for used ones if I wanted that route.
This car is a step in the right direction for Toyota.
I don't like it a LOT, but it's pretty cool to have a 2dr, smallish rwd car.
The looks don't really speak to me, but it's good. Hopefully, more companies will come out with some cars that are 2 dr, rwd, fairly sporty and get around 30 mpg.
i rele dont like the look of it.. idk.. it looks too sporty.. the original ae86 wasnt made for performance (i dont think) and the styling reflected that.. but i guess you cant recreate that again.. it looks good but it dosent look like a 86..
i hope its cheap, rock solid and simple..

i really wish they didnt referance the ae86 with this new car, it shold create a new identity on its own and not have to piggy back on a car we havent seen for over 20 years.
the looks still look edgy to me but its kinda growing, i really like the rear...the side profile looks nice although im still not a fan of the roof line much...still dont like the front end tho. i guess i gotta see it in black..or maybe white.
performance wise i do think it should do well enough to provide a fun car at a great price (like the genesis coupe turbo)...kinda wish there was a turbo boxter in there tho...maybe 250hp/tq and 200hp N/A
question...if this is a sporty, fun to drive car and it cant/wont be called a subbie here why cant it be called a scion? i think it would fit very well in their youthfull line up and probably would have better marketing. fit it right on top of the TC. Plus you know scion has their lil "hook it up" offerings so they can take care of the aftermarket rims and crap...not to mention some TRD stuff????

lets call it the Scion FC lol
idk.. i guess i have to give the car time to grow on me.. why scion FC?!
why not Scion AE..
the whole thing about marketing it as a scion is a good idea.. i think that this car would be competing in sales if it was in the subaru line up..
im guessin the prodoction model will look better. atleast im hoping.. i rele rele hope. its simple.. simple five speed.maybe 6.. alot of interchangable toyota/subaru parts.. good simple design.. light.. and not alot of computer bull**** in it eather.. im still not rele ok with the whole partnership with Subaru eather.. but w/e..
Gone but not forgotten:
96 S4 (gladly sold...time for another electrical crash yet?)
06 Mazdaspeed6 (sold)
Current (un)stable:
92 SE (now barely runnin' after all these years)
06 Mazda 6 V-6 (the new--hopefully temporary--add)
96 993 C2 (need new seats...and a roll cage)
'09 (out), more like a '10 (maybe)

call it the FC cause its Friggin Cool
i dunno really, i was thinking scion FT...but that sounded weird...FC kinda plays on the TC namplate kind of...like its the next step up
whatever brand is chosen scion, yota, subbie i just hope it has the same characteristics like you mentioned...light weight, tossable, good mod potential and not to mention a good price (think genesis turbo $)
The first thing i would do is circumcise that foreskin looking thing off the shifter, then get those carbon fiber things off the wheels. Other than that, pretty nice looking for a Toyota.
