I had a friend that had a 2001, the first year with the xenon headlights. He put 150k miles with no problem. We often pulled his 18ft boat to and from the lake and in and out of the water. Never had any problems. Only reason he got rid of it was he needed more room, so he bought a QX56.

I owned a 2000 (VG33E engine) and a 2001 (VQ35DE) and definitely get the 2001+, which it sounds like you are looking at.

I bought mine with 60k and traded it in this past March at over 100k (115?) for an FX35.

I actually liked it a lot. Very quiet and comfortable and it was perfect for my family. It has pretty good power and lots of nice features. Ours had the sport package, which has VLSD, memory driver seat and all four heated seats. I also had the audio controls on the steeriing wheel. I actually took it on some pretty nasty roads and they are very capable off road, as long as your tires are good and you don't mind a few scratches.

I got a little mad about the rig toward the end, but it was mostly my fault. I don't have emissions here and I ignored the SES light long enough to ruin the cat. Mine had a bad MAF and bad o2 sensors. I replaced the MAF, but didn't bother with the sensors. There are a few common problems. Most common is the CD changer conks out on a lot of them. It's a Bose, go figure. There's a guy on ebay that fixes it for around $200.

Mine also had the alternator go out. It cost me $400 to get it replaced, but it happened during a snow storm and it was about 10 degrees out, so I didn't do it myself.

They are pretty good for towing, as far as midsize SUVs go. I had a 17 foot tent trailer loaded with crap and I am sure it was around 4k pounds and I drove it up to the mountains to camp.

The worst thing is the mpg -- from the day I bought it I don't think I ever got better than 17 mpg and usually I got about 13 in town and 16 or so on the freeway. Mixed was like 14-15. Pulling the trailer was maybe 10-11 mpg, but I didn't really check. The trips were only like 100 miles round trip.

Had an 01 for a while, very nice, fun to drive, lots of power, but 15-16MPG on premium gas killed it for me, especially for how much room it had.

I have an '01 Pathfinder now. Its a very good family vehicle. A CR-V has more passenger room though. Like everyone else said the MPG's bums you out after a while. I have the All mode AWD system like the QX4 so you can leave it in 2WD mode to save some MPG's. Its not a commuter car for me, and I make no payments on it so the gas situation doesn't bother me that much. I fill up about once every three weeks. Watch out for the o2 sensors and the Bose unit. A very reliable SUV that doesn't look sissy. I say go for it depending on the price and if you use it to commute.

If you travel off road alot or tow every once in a while then its a no brainer. But, if you do mostly city/commuting then maybe you can pick up a soft roader.

Same exact thing for the '01 I had.
