I owned a 2000 (VG33E engine) and a 2001 (VQ35DE) and definitely get the 2001+, which it sounds like you are looking at.
I bought mine with 60k and traded it in this past March at over 100k (115?) for an FX35.
I actually liked it a lot. Very quiet and comfortable and it was perfect for my family. It has pretty good power and lots of nice features. Ours had the sport package, which has VLSD, memory driver seat and all four heated seats. I also had the audio controls on the steeriing wheel. I actually took it on some pretty nasty roads and they are very capable off road, as long as your tires are good and you don't mind a few scratches.
I got a little mad about the rig toward the end, but it was mostly my fault. I don't have emissions here and I ignored the SES light long enough to ruin the cat. Mine had a bad MAF and bad o2 sensors. I replaced the MAF, but didn't bother with the sensors. There are a few common problems. Most common is the CD changer conks out on a lot of them. It's a Bose, go figure. There's a guy on ebay that fixes it for around $200.
Mine also had the alternator go out. It cost me $400 to get it replaced, but it happened during a snow storm and it was about 10 degrees out, so I didn't do it myself.
They are pretty good for towing, as far as midsize SUVs go. I had a 17 foot tent trailer loaded with crap and I am sure it was around 4k pounds and I drove it up to the mountains to camp.
The worst thing is the mpg -- from the day I bought it I don't think I ever got better than 17 mpg and usually I got about 13 in town and 16 or so on the freeway. Mixed was like 14-15. Pulling the trailer was maybe 10-11 mpg, but I didn't really check. The trips were only like 100 miles round trip.
