Negotiating on a new G37 coupe, any current owners have tips?

Hey all,

Well I went and test drove the G37 and fell in love with it. As much as I like the 335i coupe, I think the G is a better fit for me. Going to start negotiations on a new Black/Black (unless I see athens blue in person and like that more!) G37 w/ Premium and Sports package this week, just wanted to see if anyone had general or infiniti-specific buying tips.

Pics, reviews, and all that good stuff will of course be on the way after the sale is made!

I've done some research, discussed it with friends/family, and have a little experience from buying used cars in the past. I'm just wondering if there's anything infiniti-specific I should know from a .org member, like if they have scheduled monthly quotas and they're likely to be more willing to wheel and deal at certain times, etc.

A wealth of knowledge there. Since the 09's will announce.... ARE announced already, you should neg to pay 500 below invoice. Max price to pay is 500 above invoice if the dealer gives you a hard time, then again you can always go somewhere else. Those are pretty much the deals going now. Shoot, you may even get 1000 below invoice now. The financing is great on those right now.. (1.9 IIRC).
Good luck and enjoy if you do cop one. Great car.

announce to the dealer that you "want to get on the bandwagon" and they'll give you a 5% discount.

There's no doubt the sedan is probably a better/more practical deal. The 3.5HR rocks (drove a 350z with it). But I'm intentionally getting a coupe for the sheer fun factor right now while it still fits easily into my lifestyle. When it's time to pickup my next car something tells me that four doors and a decent back seat/trunk will be in order. As long as I have a big stupid grin on my face when driving my car, that's good enough for me.

Just curious as to why the 335 coupe wasn't a fit? Is it too expensive? If it's just the difference between $2,000-3,000, I'd really lean towards to the 335. Is FAR quicker, rides better, will have slightly better resale, and most importantly, it gets about 2 to 3 mpgs more in the city/highway. That's pretty significant.

As for performance, the G37 coupe is really no faster than the 03-06 coupe. To had insult to injury, the 07/08 G35 sedan is a solid .3 seconds quicker in the 1/4 mile and the G37 sedan (due in Sept) will be even quicker (.5-.6 faster than the G37 coupe). That may be a big deal to you. Maybe not.

Then there's the question of your "crap tranny" statement for the 06 coupe in your sig. The only difference between the 6MT in the 06 coupe and G37 coupe is that Nissan has dialed out some vibration in the shifter and pedals. otherwise it's still the same tranny prone to syncro failures. Additionally, the 07/08 models are plagued by a hydraulic issue with the clutch which causes the clutch to drop to floor after hard driving. Even with the "fix", the problem still exists.

If you still want the G37 coupe, you need to know that the 09 model will be here next month so don't let Infiniti try to get you within MSRP on the car. IMO, if you want a G37, I'd just wait for 09. It comes with self-healing paint which is something you really want if you're getting black.

i rarely agree on dave on nissan related things but he seems to be spot on with his words.

you never said why the 335 wasnt a good fit for you. if price is an issue its worth saving for a few more mths to buy a 335 then to "settle" for a g37 coupe. IMHO

All good points that I've taken into consideration. Here's the rundown:

-G37 is a better fit right now purely because of where I live. The price difference isn't an issue, but I'm living with two buddies from college who couldn't afford to live in some of the really nice areas (for those of you familiar with the palo alto/surrounding area you know what I mean). So instead we have a great house, but it's in a neighborhood where a brand new BMW 335i coupe would stick out like a sore thumb. Seeing as I'll have to park on the street/in the driveway, that's more trouble than it's worth. I've found that the G just flat out doesn't attract as much "oh he probably has money" attention and the dangers that come along with those assumptions.

-On the performance front, while driving the G I was aware that it wasn't as fast as the 335i I drove, but it didn't matter. I was still having a great time. It's a huge upgrade over my aging '97 maxima, and I'm sure my next car will be even higher up on the performance ladder, so that's not too much of an issue. Also, I just flat out like the coupe styling more than the sedan. As I said before, when I look at my car I want to have a big dumb grin on my face.

-I'm actually not getting the 6mt, going with the auto. Going to be spending much more time up in SF since that's where the lady friend will be, and I had no qualms with its performance. I realize the new 7spd auto is coming out on the '09, and the self healing paint sounds excellent (also aware of that), but the reason I will probably going to go ahead and get an '08 is because I'm going to force them to give it to me at a rock bottom price since it's a late-model year and the economy is bad. If they don't take the deal, I can always wait.

At the end of the day, the Max is getting old. I I drove the G and enjoyed it greatly. It works with my life right now, and I can afford it. If I can get the deal I want then I'm going to be damn happy, and when it comes to my car and driving, that's all that really matters to me.

All good points. I suggest waiting a month more before pulling the trigger because that 7AT should give the VQ37HR a kick in the pants. The gearing should be quite a bit deeper in 1st and 2nd plus the TC locks up in 2nd+ gears which means the auto behaves like a manual. Additionally, the TC locks up quickly at part-throttle and around town and stays locked for the most part which means improved MPGs. Just something to consider. The 5AT is a great tranny. The 7AT may prove to be an exceptional tranny. It might be worth spending the extra $2K to get a new coupe. I also don't know how willing Infiniti will be to deal on coupes seeing that they've never had much issue selling them before.

I will admit, the 7 speed sounds nice. I'll try to work them over and get a really good deal, if it's not pretty strong I'll just walk away then come back and give them a "second chance" and snag an '09. Healing paint + the 7spd may in fact be worth the wait.

So here's where things stand:
-I can buy an '08 G37 coupe for slightly under invoice, 1.9% financing
-I can wait on the '09 G37 coupe and get one for invoice but have to do regular financing
-I can buy an '08 335i coupe for invoice or slightly more with .9% financing
-I can buy a used '07 335i coupe with 32k miles but every option except nav for $32,800

I'm going to have the used '07 335i inspected this weekend. If it's not in supreme condition (it was a company car for 16k then owned by a guy for 16k so I'm worried it might have been beat on) I think I'm just going to go for an '09 G37. I don't know what it is but I've really taken a liking to the G3which surprises me because I know that in many ways the 335i is a better car. Perhaps it's just because I see 3 coupes everywhere and ,despite the popularity of the G35, the G37 is still a fairly rare sight.

I work for an infiniti dealership as a salesmen.. so I know this stuff pretty well

Sounds like the numbers you were given were a little fishy. The 09 G37s havent come out yet and they are selling it to you for invoice? Sounds like a lie to get you in the door, but if its true take the deal and run! Both of those deals sound too good to be true though. The lowest we sell cars is 500 over invoice and we sell more Infinitis than anyone in New England.. If someone is looking for invoice or below.. we just pass on the offer, and this is the same for all dealerships of luxury brands.. The only cars you can usually get at invoice or maybe a little less is a honda/toyota, where they make 5K on you in financing.

Just so yah know If you are purchasing the car there is 1000 customer cash and if your leasing it there is 500$ customer cash.

I'de sell it to yah but you live across the country

On the '09 G37 I'm assuming I can get it at/close to invoice because I know a few different people connected to dealerships. They have been upfront though and said they're not sure what pricing they can get on the '09 Gs until they arrive.

If I wasn't so busy with work right now a trip across country would be the perfect way to break it in!

I would not look at a used 335i with 30k+ miles on it.
