The Toyota ECU (like most others these days with drive-by-wire) adjusts to the driver's habits. If the car has been slowly moved around a parking lot for a month and been carefully driven by test-drivers, the ECU is probably in an adjustment for "grandma" drivers (i.e. not very responsive, low shift points, etc).
This is widely discussed on the 4Runner forums about how after so-and-so's mom or girlfriend drove it, the engine and throttle were very unresponsive and the ECU had to re-learn the owner's driving styles (which were presumably more aggressive).
So..no, not "broken in" but the ECU may just need to "relearn" your driving habits. I noticed that when we bought the 4Runner it lagged a bit on throttle response, but after owning it (my wife drives like I do....moderate acceleration, etc) the throttle response is MUCH better...
