2009 Camry

I test drove the SE V6 yesterday. I was going to look at the 4 cylinder version but they didn't have a demonstrator available.

Anyway the car is nice. Well laid out interior except I found the shifter a little awkward to use. Also doesn't have climate control unless you trade up to the XLE. Something I've become a customed to with my AE. Clean lines. Well placed cup holders. Lots of storage. Nice looking and easy to read instrument cluster.

Drove nice. A little floaty but some good power coming from the 3.5L engine. Seemed a little lagging on throttle response though. I mentioned it to the sales guy and he said it was probably because the car wasn't broken in yet. But it is a Camry so I wasn't expecting the car to be that quick and nimble.

Overall I liked the car. If it wasn't for the lack of climate control I would definitely buy it.

The sales guy is FOS (as most of them are), throttle response has nothing to do with whether the car is broken in or not.

The Toyota ECU (like most others these days with drive-by-wire) adjusts to the driver's habits. If the car has been slowly moved around a parking lot for a month and been carefully driven by test-drivers, the ECU is probably in an adjustment for "grandma" drivers (i.e. not very responsive, low shift points, etc).

This is widely discussed on the 4Runner forums about how after so-and-so's mom or girlfriend drove it, the engine and throttle were very unresponsive and the ECU had to re-learn the owner's driving styles (which were presumably more aggressive).

So..no, not "broken in" but the ECU may just need to "relearn" your driving habits. I noticed that when we bought the 4Runner it lagged a bit on throttle response, but after owning it (my wife drives like I do....moderate acceleration, etc) the throttle response is MUCH better...

Yes, this is true. My girlfriend's 07 Camry required the throttle to be pressed 1/3rd in before anything happened. Now, it's about 1/5th.

Yeah. I was pretty sure the sales guy didn't know what he was talking about and it was an ECU "issue". Thanks for the feedback guys.
