Totalled the car.... need advice on new car options

So last night I totalled my car on I76 when a dump truck pulled out in front of me. I'm looking to spend somewhere up to 20k but cheaper the better. Wasn't paying a car payment before and it's gonna suck to start paying one now.

I'm looking for fuel efficiency (preferably something that can take 87 octane) but also have as much umph as my 99 max did.

Any thoughts?

SO Insurance is not gonna cover it?
Anyways sorry to hear that I remember how I felt when I lost mine in Jan.
Btw you need to provide more info like how many doors, whether you want a rwd or fwd or awd, domestic or import, whether you are considering used car and etc. All I can think of now is mazda 3, honda fit or civic , vw jetta /golf , nissan altima, ford focus/fusion and etc. The problem is under 20k there are not so many good new car cadidates. If you are consdering used, then you have almost unlimited choise like acura tl/tsx/rsx, bmw m3/ z/3/5 series, honda s2000/civic SI/accord V6/, nissan altima V6/maxima, mazdaspeed, lexus IS/ infiniti G35,and bunch of other cars. Btw are going to get a schtick?

thanks guys..... definitely used and I've found a few cars I like so far. IS300, BMW 325 or 330, Prelude, S2000, Acura CL, and still looking.

I like the Mazda 6's and my bro's got one but I think I'm gonna pass on the 6.

Yeah front end is totalled and air bags popped. No way they fix it.

nah want something differen't and preferably a little better on gas and that doesn't have to take at least 91 octane..... a 330 would be nice but I prefer a 4 door. Just saw a nice 03 Audi A4 3.0 for sale on EBay in my area. Also, saw an IS300 in my area that's nice. Check em out, let me know what you think.

Guess they both don't get better gas mileage though..... anyone know if they require 93 octane?

I don't know for sure but don't you think those two cars needs premium?
Also, I am not so sure about audi reliability so people who owned a4 might have an opinion on that.

I have an '04 Mazda3 (2.3L, 165hp) sedan for sale...looks good, gets 32mpg highway, in excellent shape inside and out....oh, and only 17k miles on it!

Have it listed for $12750, but if you want to drive down here you can have it for $12000....

it's a great car, we just had to get somethign bigger for the growing family.

---

or if you don't buy mine, I still think a Mazda3 ("S" model with the 2.3) would fit what you are looking for....and can be had new for under $20k and used with low miles under $15k.

The mazda3 2.3 is nice as well. I wouldn't get the IS, it is kidna small inside but you can't go wrong with any toyo. Preludes/S2k's need premium gas. CL = lols
BMW's = fun and decent on gas depending on which one you get, but 3series are also small.

Very open ended question.
as others have asked:
minimum number of doors?
a/t or M/T?
FWD, RWD or AWD?
Brand preference?
"Japanese" "european" or "US" Brand?
How long do you plan on keeping the car?
what options are important to you?
What do you plan on doing with the car:
racing? if so what kind?
Cruising? Pimping?
shuttling friends? Driving all by yo' damself?
I find people cars all the time, but there are many questions to ask. It's not easy for an enthusiast to find the "right" car, Maybe that's why I've had over 20.

pugeot

They make 330s in sedan form. They actually get better mileage than the 325 and are quicker than a 4th gen. Premium isn't required but it is recommended.
