REPORT: Next-gen Nissan GT-R in the works for 2013

by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Oct 4th 2009 at 4:07PM
2010 Nissan GT-R – Click above for high-res image gallery

Hot on the heels of reports, brought to you by British car site PistonHeads upon their visit to the Nissan's Ring-side test facility, of updates planned for the current R35-generation Nissan GT-R comes another report detailing the Japanese automaker's plans for the next-generation R36 model.

With competitors lining up to challenge the current GT-R's performance benchmark, Nissan's senior veep for global product planning, Andy Palmer, confirmed that plans are underway to succeed Godzilla with a next-generation model. The R36 will, according to the report, carry over the current model's twin-turbo V6, but with enough modifications to keep it ahead of the pack. The new GT-R is expected to hit the road by 2013 at the latest. Beyond that, Palmer didn't disclose many details, except to say that Nissan is committed to the GT-R program and won't be letting the Porsche 911 GT2 alone without a fight.

IMHO, if Nissan really wants to battle the GT-2, they should dump all the electronic gizmos and take out 500lbs off the next version.

oh yeah, the ones now are art, but they could make a Ferrari Catalina, charge $648k for it and still have a 10 year waiting list.

Not bad....I've always thought that cars looked better with a spoiler regardless of make, but that's not the case at least nowadays. IIRC, most Ferrari's don't have rear spoilers, at least the GTs.....

Maybe this guy doesn't take his over 55mph, hence no spoiler?

Looks better without the spoiler, and unless he road races it won't make a difference. Most Ferrari's have a pretty nice diffusers so they don't have much of a spoiler, unlike the GTR which just has an under panel in the rear; surprisingly.

i would hope the GTR was designed for use without a spoiler
the spoiler is probably something added by the marketing dept

according to jeremy clarkson's review on top gear...EVERY part of the gtr....mirrors, door handles, hood lines...were meant to channel air to the spoiler..

wouldnt a gtr beat a gt2 on most tracks, non multi lap races given.

if he is like the majority of sports car owners he would ever see a race track with his vehicle let alone drive hard enough to need the extra downforce. its an awd 4000lb car. it ill be just fine.

Looks are irrelevant to me in this case. If a spoiler serves a function (or else it wouldn't be a spoiler ) it belongs on the trunk lid IMO.

i hear you, but we dont own a gtr and i know i dont have gtr money so what we feel is needed on a car that belongs to others might not hold much weight.

the deli guy i go to uses his gtr for bad weather commuting when hit kr500 is parked. some people and i mean many people would buy a sports car, add rims to it, subs, etc and do what they wish to make it their own.

if anything, people taking the spoiler off a gtr is a good thing. it means non performance based people are buying the gtr for maybe its looks, or its interior etc. and those are values which keep sales coming in.

Good observation. Hopefully sales don't dwindle and godzilla continues to thrive!

PRESS RELEASE:

October 21, 2009
Nissan Releases New-Spec Nissan GT-R

YOKOHAMA (Oct. 21, 2009) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the release of the latest version of the Nissan GT-R, which goes on sale on December 7th at Nissan dealers nationwide in Japan. The updated GT-R receives a number of enhancements, including a revised navigation system, recalibrated suspension settings and an improved-flow catalyst system. It is scheduled to go on sale in other global markets beginning next spring.

Since its introduction in the Japanese market in December 2007, the Nissan GT-R has gone through continuous evolution, remaining on the cutting-edge of multi-dimensional performance. The GT-R has also been acclaimed globally, winning more than 50 top awards in various categories since launch. Nissan also supports GT-R owners with exceptional after-sales service.

The latest revisions to GT-R include a new HDD-based CARWINGS navigation system with enhanced entertainment functions. A USB port with iPod®*1 connectivity allows the driver and passengers to enjoy their favorite music in the car, creating an even more pleasant interior environment. *2

In addition, the GT-R's suspension has been retuned to offer enhanced, premium quality ride comfort, while still providing the driver with a feeling of direct contact with the road surface. The accuracy of the front shock absorbers and springs has been increased and the stiffness of rear suspension radius rod bushings has been strengthened. Rear diffusers with cooling ducts, previously available only on the GT-R SpecV, have been expanded to non-SpecV models, improving cooling performance around the rear floor area.

The exclusive Nissan GT-R SpecV models receive revised rear shock absorber settings, enhancing the characteristic combination of supple ride comfort and flat, predictable handling. In conjunction with this change, SpecV now comes standard with Dunlop tires. The previously standard Bridgestone tires are available as a factory-installed option.

Finally, both the Nissan GT-R and GT-R SpecV achieve improved low- and mid-range engine response, thanks to newly adopted hexagonal meshed catalyst cells that reduce ventilation/airflow resistance.
Nationwide MSRP Pricing in Japan (including consumption tax)

Drivetrain Engine Grade Transmission Price (yen)
4WD VR38DETT GT-R GR6 dual clutch
transmission 8,610,000 ☆Model in photo
GT-R Black edition 8,820,000
GT-R Premium edition 9,240,000
GT-R SpecV 15,750,000

* SpecV goes on sale at seven specially selected Nissan dealers throughout Japan.
*1 iPod is a trademark of Apple Computer, Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.
*2 May not be applicable in selected countries.

Nissan GT-R SpecM Still in the Works

By Ed Hellwig | November 17, 2009

Those who have followed the Nissan GT-R since it was named the Skyline GT-R (R32) know that there was a variant called the M-Spec. It was part of the R34 lineup and was the favorite of many enthusiasts because of its compliant suspension and overall civility.
While the R34 V-Spec was made for the track, the M-Spec was more of a grand tourer, providing the best of both the performance and comfort worlds. The R34 M-Spec was the pet project of Kazutoshi Mizuno, the man behind the current GT-R (R35), the one we finally received in the States.
"We've always planned that after we released the SpecV, we were going to build the SpecM," Mizuno said.

And just like the first SpecM, the new one is meant to have a much more compliant ride, while little to no sacrifice in cornering prowess. The ride should be on par with the likes of Aston Martin or Ferrari, making it a road car first and a track car second.

The biggest surprise in all this is that the price of the SpecM will soar past that of the SpecV. While the Spec V is prices at 15,750,000 yen, the SpecM will go for 18,000,000, meaning that it will indeed be priced like a European supercar. The car's release may come as soon as early next year.
