I will be moving to Beaumont, about an hour east of Houston. Since I'm moving there, I had a few questions I was hoping you guys who already live in the Houston/Beaumont area could help me with.
They are:
Any good/reliable mechanics in this area? I prefer word of mouth recommendations rather than just picking one out
Any good body shops? I need to get some body work done and again would rather go with someone who has worked and done a good job on a forum members car.
Any good detailers? For when I want to get my car nice and clean, at least cleaner than I can possibly do every once and awhile.
Beaumont? I'm sorry. That place is da ghetto. Too close to Loserana, IMO.
Anyway, for a good mechanic, I can recommend a great one in Houston. Doug Bakke at Awesome Z. 281-219-0015. Honest mechanic and fair prices. He specializes in Zs, but can and will work on anything. I do 99.9% of my own work on my car (including alignments and engine/tranny work), and he's the only one I trust to do it right other than me.
As for Beaumont, I dunno of anything out that far. Probably going to have to come into Baytown before you find much of anything of value.

I landed a job with ExxonMobil at their refinery in town. And I'm on the western end of Beaumont so I'm avoiding the problem areas that my new co-workers and my real estate agent warned me about.
I used to live there. Tate and Co. in Mid County is a great body shop. I had my 95 Maxima in there and they did a great job and were reasonably priced. If you're looking for a gym to join I can hook you up there too. It's in Port Arthur about 10 minutes form the mighty Exxon Mobil though. Anytime Fitness on highway 365. I know the owners.
I can also recommend where not to go; avoid the jackasses at Vin's Paint and Body at all costs no matter how many morons tell you they do good work. I know from experience that they are overpriced as they suck.
Oh my car doesn't need anything for inspection, but in order to obtain a Texas License, I need to get my car inspected, so I can get it registered, after I get it registered I can get my license.
man and I thought I had to jump through hoops to get my license in PA.
Anyone know if those inspection places for cars also do motorcycles?
White Shadow : thanks for all that info! it's greatly appreciated.
Trav: Hell yea man, I drive a black 2000 with dark tinted windows. I'll let you know what units I'm working on when I find out.
Can you PM me his name? and your name so I can tell him how I found him?
Maybe if I just take it to M.S. they can do it and hopefully not rape me on everything.
I don't know the guy who works there that ecsdesignz mentions, but I would not use that dealership. The parts department is inept at best. On 2 occasions the service department gave me the "I don't really give a damn about you or your car" treatment, and I wanted to buy a 2000 dodge Ram P/U there and they wouldn't budge a dollar under MSRP and told me that I wouldn't find it cheaper anywhere. They meant it. I bought it in Oklahoma and drove it back there to show them the bill of sale for $125 over invoice. I guess they think they have a Ferrari dealership.
As you may be able to tell, not a fan of Mike Smith Autoplex. This was obviously a long time ago, maybe they've changed now.
Makes sense, when I went there to inquire about the GT-R they told me they were charging 20k over sticker....I laughed and walked away. Now I'm not naive enough to think that I will get it for sticker or less, but I know 20k over sticker is WAAAAY to much.
Maybe I'll wait for the 2010 or 11 model since hopefully by then Nissan will have increased production and the price wont be as high. Also allows me to save for a sizable downpayment. but thanks for the heads up
getting your car inspected isn't a huge ordeal. there is definitely no shortage of inspection places and it really doesn't matter who does it unless you need a "hook up" sticker (i.e. illegal or unable to pass).
Yea I found a place right around the corner who can inspect it. The mechanic question was mainly for when the car needs maintenance. I, like most of the people here, don't want just anyone rummaging around my car.
