Just curious, does your maxima sound different than gxe's or gle's my car seems to have a deep exhaust tone that sounds almost like a tiburon. The muffler looks stock and sounds like a normal max untill it hits around 2700-3000 zone. Is this a diffrent oem muffler or did the crazy previous owner probably modify it?

yea that's the same thing I noticed. Especially with blue calipers it looks like it some kid that owned a gle or something and did some mod's (ae'd head lights new seats and some sel badges)

I'm pretty sure sel's had body paint colored grills. Never heard of anybody switching them to chrome.

yeah but its so hard to switch a GLE over to an SE-L. To find the SE-L logos would be easy but to find to the leather seats from an SE-L would be the though part.
Looks like someone just switched the grill from a GLE or GXE and put it on there. Too many parts to switch if he converted a GLE to a SE-L. If he did, he did a good job at it.

Or maybe instead of shelling all that money into those parts, he just liked the idea and look of a chrome grill better and switched to that. Could be a whole lot cheaper!!

Great color combo, but too bad its auto... paint those calipers black and match the grill and it will look a lot sexier, but all in all, very nice ride

yeah, but the shifter dosent look to be leather, looks like a vinyl GXE one.

Did you buy this from a private seller or a dealer?

*edit*

most likely a interior seat swap.. but i'd still get a carfax on it.

His shifter is the same as I have on my SE, so no its not a GXE one.

Hopefully that grill isn't the result from new parts after an accident. Congrats on the new ride, I really like those seats.

Solve some of these questions with a carfax, I came very close to buying a '98 that was a TOTAL LOSS and was rebuilt, and I am pretty sharp with details when it comes to these cars. Best of luck with it.

100% sure its a SEL it has both SEL badges on the side, non chrome back nissan badge non chrome doorhandles. The car was in a minor unreported accident thats why it has a chrome grille, im getting a new grille soon for the car. Also that means i have 2 grilles that are from a 99 and a 98 both in great cond.

i also got new tires today, please no bashing the blue control arm i bought it like that

Dirty already but its genuine

Se limted see...

1. I paid 8,700 bought it thru a car broker (friend) who got it from a dealership and sold it to me...
2. this car is clean on carfax but it was actually in a accident before.
3. for real it is a SEL i even checked the vin#
4. i assume you would fail emssions with a y-pipe correct? My car passed... so i assume i dont have one...

It is a real SEL but it does have a vinyl shifter...Beyond me...
this would have been way too much work to convert a gxe or gle, se to a se-l, it would be cheaper to buy a new se-l

other pics

From the stickies:

TO DECODE THE VIN PLATE:
Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The sixth character is the trim level designator, defined as follows:

E = GXE
G = GLE
V = SE

Its a SE see....

You will still pass emissions with a y-pipe, as long as you give the cat ample time to warm up. the aftermarket y-pipe eliminates the pre-cats, which are used for filtering the exhaust before the cat warms up

all i know is that SEL has a special badge, i think the seats have "SE" perforated into them only in the SEL (correct me if im wrong) and i belive they have special SE Limted floormats.... (again i could not tell you my car came without mats) To my knowledge thats about it.... I also think that there was a special red color exclusive to the SEL.

ill check tomrrow if the car has a y-pipe installed on it..

do you know exactly what type of accident it was? Your "blue" control arm indicates it was replaced rather premature (especially at 55k). Good purchase nevertheless

It was hit in the front it was enough damage done that a new hood, grille, left headlight, radiator and condenser was put on. This is all i know but the vehicles alignment was not affected uppon the accident so it was no that big im guessing. The only way of telling it was in accident is if you look at the drivers foglight (slightly cracked) and going to be replaced, or the drivers headlight, (its more clear than the other one, soon to be fixed) all body panels are properly aligned and if you looked at the car most people will not guess that its been in accident. The only other thing i know about this accident is that none of the airbags were deployed.

Its all fixed now it looks and runs great like any other maxima! I personally inspected it along with 2 other trusted mechanics. We all approved of it

As for the blue control arms both of them are blue... the paint is actually very old and starting to fall off. The control arm is in great condition it is not bent or anything of those means. The car has already had 2 shop visits for minor repairs. All is good with the max.

Welcome to Maxima.org! Nice find, let the modding begin. Also I see your in Denver, that's good, we could use more Maximas around here. Make sure to go in the Regional Forum (West Coast) often, we are planning some meets here pretty soon. Good Luck

I figured out my own question.... My car sounds cool cause it has a rusted muffler. Suprizingly it sounds very good! I dont know how i missed this.... I dont really plan on fixing it either, it sounds to cool and maybe i gained an extra horsepower...

Stock muffler what i tell ya...

i feel so dumb for missing this!

the answer to the shifter being vinyl... you clearly have aftermarket leather seats... because your seats were originally cloth, you shifter looks like that.

how do i know this you ask?

My 99-SEL had cloth. i bought it used from a nissan dealer 3 years ago, I had them put aftermarket leather in... my shifter looks the same. additionally, your seat has SE imprinted... nissan did not do that in 99

---hope i helped
