should i paint my tail lights?

so i'm soon going to get some night shade and tint my tails but i stumbled upon this picture and like the way it looks but wanted some opinions before i go and do it.

i have a pebble beige 96 i30 and just purchase a can of touch up paint offline to paint my m3 lip so i'm going to have some left over. do you think it looks ok?

What i was thinking of doing:

lol k. i'm just frustrated because i keep running into this infiniti that looks a lot like mine. i got my tint he got his. i got cefiro headlights he got them so i'm just looking for a way to set it off. in retrospect it looks bad but i'm getting desperate to find something haha. any suggestions would be cool, i should be getting an m3 lip in the mail any day now so that will help but i'm sick of this kid and his awesome looking car impersonator. hahah

In other words you both have pretty much stock I30's, right? I'd rather look stock than awkward, like that white car looks. I think I saw a foreign car that had the center garnish painted (a dark car) and it looked alright. Just not feeling that white one.

Where did you get the M3 spoiler from? Any pics?

i got the m3 spoiler off ebay for like 28 bucks. still hasnt arrived yet, ordered it last week so ill post some pics as soon as i can. i'm trying to make my car not look stock or awkward. but i also have limited funds so i guess i'm just looking for cheap little things to make it different. i didnt put much thought into painting the tail lights before i asked. just wanted some opinions. in retrospect i cant say i would of actually done it.

If your car was black it might look cool to have a thick tint on your tail lights

But that white car it just looks like dirt.

The fashion in tail lights is to make them as clear as possible really.

Hey, its been a while since I have been on here, but I checked in tonight. I had a 1996 I30 and redded out my tail lights. You can see pictures of them on my Cardomain page if you are interested. I loved the look of them all red. In fact, I have the pair of red tail lights in a box in my house (clarification: they are painted red) If anyone wants to buy them let me know. My i30 got totaled a few years ago so I cant use them. Shoot me an email if you want them or any of my other parts that I have.

I vote for the red out. Get the Testors 1605 transparent candy apple red paint that's used on the David L's and you should be fine.

I get the paint off eBay.

Okay, This looks ridiculous! Might as well go buy a Honda! I second or third the redout tails. I've used transparent red film in the past (Its just like window tint. That works great with a little soapy water and a heat source. Also, you can peel it right off in the future if you want to go back unlike the paint.

Ridiculous? I think that guy did a pretty fine job, looks like the car came like that, and imagine putting LED's in them. So because the tail lights are round instead of rectangle, its somehow some wannabe Honda? I've never seen a Honda with round tail lights. If anything, the new Altima, Sentra, G35, M35, and 5th gen Maxima have round tail lights.

I'm not saying he has to use those, I'm saying instead of f*cking around with the stock tail lights, go make your own custom lights and get the saw and bondo ready for some nice custom fabrication work.

It seems a waste of time and money to do something where the tail lights are the same except one small piece is red instead of clear... plus if youre gonna keep them stock, they look better with the red on the top and clear on the bottom anyway.

I guess it depends on how much you want to put into it. Personally, I think it looks completely silly when you mix and match headlights and tailights. I think he is making suttle changes. M3 spoiler, painting tails, etc. Sounds like it would be a big disaster if this man fab'd / bondo'd and such. You will never get your money back in the end.

Plus, there is also a very small audience that enjoys such mods. Okay, thats it! I think I made some good points.

Not trying to be a d**k! Just saying red transparent film, $10 bucks. Skyline tailights, Bondo, Paint, etc = $$$$.

Really? Its a 13 yr old car, worth probably 5K on a good day!?!

That may very well be one of the most rice things I have ever seen. An I30 is not an R34 Skyline, so there's no sense pretending that it is.

OP, I vote for the red-out for your tails. I did it on the tails of my 5.5 gen and it looks great. I think if you go that route you'll be really satisfied with the results.

Yeah I know what you mean. You don't sound like a d1ck at all. I'm just sayin, there are so many options out there and all you need to know is the right body shop and anything can be possible.

No one said the I30 is a skyline lol. To tell you the truth, I didn't even notice those came from a skyline until you said it.

Yea, you hear what i'm saying...The only way it wont cost ya alot, is if you do it yourself. Or you have a buddy that can work for beer.

For the price of this to be done, you could have maybe 3 or 4 worth while good mods, that give you HP or better handling.

yeah, i am definitely not looking into spending that much on aesthetics. i am a poor college student and at the moment all of my money is going to keeping the car running so i am just looking for cheap simple things to just set it apart. i really like the look of the red tail so i am probably going to go that route.

The film works well. And its cheap, you can buy a pretty good sized piece for like $10 bucks on ebay.

Are you spraying the whole light or just the clear/amber sections?

You could do either or. It's won't affect light output on the part that's already red.
