300zx BBK Installed

300zx BBK Installed
I installed my "BBK" yesterday. It was a long process all in all, but I finally got it done. When I first got the brakes, they were just painted with some red high temp color. The brakes were leaking and the brake fluid ate a way the paint all around the pistons. I put it on just for test fitting, and it turned out that the rotors were rubbing too. So I had the rotors milled down and the calipers powdercoated, and then I rebuilt them. Rebuilding was really easy and putting everything together was not hard at all. I also had the inner part of the rotors powdercoated. I just wanted the hub, but I guess they went into a coating frenzy and powdercoated the backside of the hub, the hub and the entire insides of the rotors lol. I paid $160 all in all for all powdercoating. The also powdercoated the dog bone brackets, so I think I got a decent deal out of it
Brake pads are Hawks HPS
Impressions so far: The pedal feels mushier than the stock brakes. I had to wait until night, took the car to an empty highway outside of the city and followed the bedding in procedures. Still they grip slow at first, and it seems once they build up pressure they brake better. Also I could not get my wheels to lock up, so my plan is to drive around for a week and then rebleed them.
Another thing. A lot of people complained about is worse acceleration because of the weight of the rotors. I don't really think so. I also think turning the steering wheel got easier, but that might be my imagination. The aluminum 300zx calipers did feel a lot lighter than the stock ones.
Now pictures:
Oh and off topic. But while I was doing the brakes I found both boots of the CV joints ripped apart and you could see the grease. No popping or clanking noises tho. Can I just replace the boots?

nope, just front. but air might have gotten into the system, might be a good idea too then. I gotta change the rear pads anyways next week, will do that then.
I believe they are redrilled cobra rotors. they were 13" originally but I had to get them shaved down some. I'll measure one of these days

Oh and the 1000 letters signature limit sucks! I tried linking the thread to all my mods, so that people won't have to PM me about it etc (cos all the info is in them) and it won't let me, because the links take so many characters.

Dumb Q.. are the bleeders at the top of the caliper? too many people mount the calipers backwards, and the bleeder is on the wrong end of the caliper. Causes pedal to be mushy.
And yes.. you need to bleed all 4 corners, not just the fronts.

they're on the top.
I will rebleed them and see what happens. How do speed bleeders work btw? We were bleeding the brakes, and for some reason whenever my buddy pumped the pedals fluid would come out. We were like WTF, it wasn't leaking otherwise. So we took em off and tossed em and used the maxima ones. Only after we trashed everything and i got home I remembered that the guy said he had speedbleeders on them. Is that how they work?

yeah. speedbleeders are simply a 1-way valve. unscrew the bleeder screw slightly and then push the pedal down. fluid comes out (just like a regular bleeder), but when you pick up the pedal, the vlave closes and prevents fluid/air from flowing backward.
unfortunately, the nissan brake system doesn't work too sell with speedbleeders and you usually get a soft pedal with them. I used them on my car for about 1 week until I pulled them off and went back to stock and a 2-person bleed procedure.

yeah, you will need to bleed all four as stated. when you do the rears next week, don't just bleed the rears and call it a day bleed the fronts again too.
Was looking into doing the new G37 brakes that are grey and already say Infiniti on them.

So I finally got around to re-bleed all my brakes. A bunch of air came out. We frequently started the car to get a pedal feel and surprisingly more air came out afterwards. I also changed my rear pads to axxis ultimate. Even tho I didn't break them in yet, the pedal feels so much better. Wheels lock up and engage ABS as well. I don't think it ever did with the stockers. I'm very happy with the results.

Front and rears need to be blead even if just the front brakes were changed.
