I30 stuttering when cold

When I let my '01 I30 (78K) sit overnight and then go to drive to work, it sometimes behaves strangely. When I start driving through the parking lot of my apartment building (obviously slowly) the car does something that I can only describe as stuttering...it's a mild shudder but it doesn't feel like the car is about to stall. Once I get out onto the road it disappears completely. This only happens when the engine is cold and the car has sat over night. I know this is a little vague but any kind of direction to look in would be appreciated.

Many variables, tune-up status needs to be given since a bad fuel filter or plugs could be the culprit. 2 bits of knowledge that may help you: Engines require more fuel when cold, on your car this info is based off of the ECTS, and 2nd: The o2 sensors can't work until they reach a certain temperature, so the ECU will always be in open loop mode where it relies on the MAF sensor.

Interesting that you should mention a tune-up...the car has 78K and I have no records of a tuneup being done. Maybe it's time for new plugs. However I know that the transmission and coolant have both been flushed on schedule and all other recommended maintenance has been done on time including 5K oil changes with Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. I've also asked about the fuel filter and been told by dealers that it isn't something that's designed to be replaced. Are they wrong? The other thought I had was maybe a dirty IAC valve since as soon as I give the car gas it's fine and the problem doesn't occur on warm starts.

Literally other than this issue this car looks and drives as new. I keep this thing maintained as well as I can so I would hope this is just a minor issue.

Took the car into the dealer today...the culprit was a bad MAF sensor.

Must be the MAF

I had the exact same problem. Turned out to be the MAF. Tried cleaning it, changing the plugs, filters and all, but it did not work. If you know how to use a screwdriver, call DaveB and he'll hook you up with a new MAF for an unbelievable price. Easy to change. Drives like a baby again..

I just had the dealer fix it, but I appreciate the information on where to get one cheap.

This is a very common problem with Maximas. You should search their posts on this subject. For the best prices on anything call Dave Burnett (also known as Dave B.). Do a search and you'll find his contact information.
