There is noway you can get the factory navigation system to work in a non-navigation equipped I30 - I35 (well never is harsh). If you swap the harness from an navi equipped I30 and put it into a non-navi I30, then you can do it. But that means getting your hands on a Main harness $$$$$ not to mention that the factory system with parts to retract and open cost $3500.
HOWEVER, if you are going aftermarket, MORE POWER to you

Oh and I have an 04 with navi and yes it's CD based (STUPID NISSAN!) My brother just bought a TSX and his touch screen navi with voice command prompts kills every navi system infinti has. He even has the joystick lever when he doesn't want to touch the screen.

The current G35/M nav systems are better, but the lack of a touchscreen is unfortunate. It seems Acura is moving away from the touchscreens though, the Acura RL and MDX now have controllers instead of touchscreens. I don't get why though. I figured it would be clear now that everyone hates BMW's iDrive so it's a bad idea to come up with something similar.

Since we've strayed a little OT..
The nav in my father's M35 is very impressive. By far the best OEM nav system that I've used (not saying it's the best out there...just the best one I've touched).
The nav in the new G35s is pretty similar to the nav in the M35/45, but it does have the touchscreen feature. Cool, but you can really do everything you need to without touching the screen.

I have to agree with you on that. Honda/Acura Navi's are one of the best I've seen. My gf just got a 2007 Civic with Navi... makes me look forward to the day I will have one in my car

I was going to use the stock navigation screen for my carputer until someone told me that the stock screen wont support it - nor will it support video playback because of the limited resolution and color output. Is this true?

There is a Nav-to-TV conversion buy by Dom. that has been noted. I did check and there is a box to make the conversion work.. I doubt the quality of the video will be mind blowing, but it should look somewhat decent and cool toggling back and forth from Nav to DVD or backup camera..

Iam working on a NAVI 2 TV conversion.
I removed the navidisplay...and the holder is powerd by a switch.
Now i will put a aftermarket display in the holder.
But ist hard 2 find a display in the right bigness.
Iam looking for a display without buttons.

The new OEM Infiniti/Navigation systems are by far one of the best IMO. After market is also way better. Best thing to do if you don't mind doing the work is Installing a carputer. So much more functionality and the options your have a pretty much limitless.

Carputers can also be updated easily
