Transmission Fluid

I heard from the Infinity service clerk in our area that I35 is using special transmission fluid and replacement could be done only with Nissan transmission fluid. Because drain and fill method replaces only 1/3-1/2 of it at one time they reccomend not to mix different fluids together. Do you have any experience with this and what type of replacement transmission fluid you used.

I had my tranny flushed (pan dropped and magnets cleaned) with Amsoil ATF, the shifts have never been smoother, I barely feel them. PM talkinghorse, he is an Amsoil dealer in the group buy section. Also look in the fluids section, there is a sticky about every fluid in our cars, and DIY steps.

Im about to flush my tranny too .. . probably gonna email the Amsoil guy later today. Glad to see a fellow San Jose poster .. . there are I30s all over this area.

I don't do flashing in my cars. May be I am conservative but if the tranny in a good condition, I believe, it is easy (and safer) to perform drain and refill vs flashing. You obviously need the second person for flashing to watch the drain (if you are doing it yourself and not in the shop), stop the engine at some time and refill the same amount. Then do it again. So, unless you fluid has a burned smell and dirty, I would not do it.
Do you know where to buy Matic-D ATF online or somewhere else. I hate to go to the dealer.

Kinda late with this, but I found Nissan Matic D fluid at the Nissan dealer in Gilroy at a reasonable price. Most Nissan dealers have it cheaper than Frontier Inf.

No problem, I changed it past weekend. Bought at Frontier with 15% discount coupon, about $5 per quart. How much it is in Gilroy? I will prepare for the next year. With prices on gas/oil going that high it will be around $10 next year.

The Nissan-branded ATF (Nissan-matic D, etc) you buy from the dealer is a petroleum-based fluid. Dextron III ATF can also be used as an alternative for 'matic-D.

If you want a synthetic-based ATF, AMSOIL is specifically labeled as meeting Nissan-matic D, J and K specifications. As with engine oils, there's absolutely comparison between a high quality synthetic ATF and their petroleum-based counterparts.
