Set timing possible or not?

A call to the local dealer's service dept. produced "Chris" in Service who verified that the timing and base idle can be set on (at least my version of) our cars.

I've received conflicting information on this site as to wether this is actually possible and would like your collective understanding on the topic.

Chris, the service rep., indicated that the Consult diagnostic tool isn't entirely for diagnostics only and that through the ECM, using the Consult, timing, along with base idle can be set or "reset" is the actual term he used.

Chris can be contacted at (877) 981-5656 for verification. (free call from anywhere, I think)

What's your experience or information of why Chris is wrong or not providing accurate information (mis-informed)?

Thanks.

The timing is NOT adjustable no way what so ever. Unless of course chris seems to have found way to do it that the Nissan engineers who desinged the motor and wrote the FSM were unaware of...

Thanks I30ds,

The mention of the service manual was ideal. Can you tell me if there's specific mention of it in the service manual?

I'm planning to go down there and direct him to the text if there is.

Actually, I'll take any documentation you can point me to that will provide me with "correcting" info for them.

Daggumit, I'm glad I joined this group!

Here you go straight from the horse's mouth...

This is from the pages EC-32 and EC-33 from a 1997 I30 service manual, so they cant even play the 'this is for a maxima, not an I30' card. Knowing typical Nissan dealerships though, they will still try to make up some excuse to save face.

Keep me updated with what they say...

Great post!

You will find the information on this site 10x more acurate than a dealer....sad but true. You can adjust idle to a certain degree via the TPS sensor by adjusting voltage parameters but you have to allow the TPS to reach at least 3.8 volts or so or your car my not go into open loop mode.

Thanks. Since I now have a scanner, there are a few other things that I am wanting to post on here and possibly become stickies for general reference (like the breakdown diagrams of the suspension with what should be replaced for a full rebuild for example)... What do you think about that?
