Starting problem

My problem is when I turn my ignition to on, all the dash lights up as it should. When I go to start, the dash lights go out and I hear a click. No starter engagement at all.
This is not a battery or battery connection problem because when I have my lights on and go to start, the lights do not dim. I have also shorted across the starter solenoid and the starter spins. I have also run a jumper wire from the battery to the ignition wire on the starter solenoid and it cranks over fine. I have also checked for voltage on the ignition starter wire at the starter solenoid and have no power when I turn the ignition to start.
I put all the air box stuff back together with the jumper wire still connected to the starter solenoid, turned the key to the run position and touched the jumper wire to the battery and the engine started and ran for a couple seconds and would not start again, but would still crank. I suspect that for the second or two that it ran, that was just residual pressure in the fuel system and the fuel pump is not being energized.
I have also checked with my spare key and get the same results, so I suspect it is not a key related security system problem, but it may still be a security problem.
I have also checked the fuse in the box under the dash noted as starter signal and it is good. I have not checked to see that the fuse has power running to it, but I intend to.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what to do next, I would really appreciate it.
Randy

Found the problem. It was a wire that was broken where the connector is on the transmission that is part of the Park/Neutral starting circuit.. Repaired the wire and now starting good. Randy
