I have the money and would be willing to buy an ecu upgrade if they come out with a 98 application with no CEL.

So who currently has a 96 ecu in their 97?

Any other problems besides CEL? Running to rich or something?
Can you send in ANY 96 ECU for a JWT one? or must is be a 96 manual SE ecu to send in?

I ran a '96 modded ECU in my '97 SE just fine. I matched a 5sp to a 5sp just for safety's sake.

Can we get a concensus of what years everyone wants in the list?

The 97s are different than the 98s and they are in turn different from the 99s

Also, you guys KNOW there is a JWT available for the 96 and before 4th gens, right?

I dunno. People just say 'I'm in' when they have no idea what price it's going to be. Would people be willing to pay an even $600 for this?

I would. I'm in for 600 on a 98.

I would think with 15 listed already we could easily double that over time so maybe 30+. Now we're talking almost 20K worth.

As for the '95/'96 (and some '97s') I think they were just posting that they'd be in for a group deal of $4xx-$5xx rather than the traditional $550ish pricing

I guess we could add 99s now to the list for fun?? I dunno. It was my understanding 97-98 may come out from JWT? I am open to other vendors to succeed as well. I wish we could just unlock my 4th gen thread at least..........

So how do you know for sure if your 97 will take a 96 without problems? Date it was made???

How many was that again? I will be contacting JWT next week if i get a chance, and talk to them about the avail option for the 97's. If they still can't do it for the 97-98's, how many would be in for using a 96?

The problem with using a 96 (for me) is I do not have one to send into them. If they would take my 97 ecu for the core I would. Unless you know where can find some cheap 96 ecu send in for reprogramming.

What kind of price break are we looking at on the 96?

Will the 96 work for the 97 and 98? Do the 97/98 get the same gains as the 96 would? With the G-force ECU upgrade the 97 saw less gains than the 96, is the JWT the same way? Is there any way to avoid the CEL?

I guess you could just shop around e-bay or junkyards until you found a good deal on a 96 ECU, then you would have yours as a spare. I would be interested in a ECU upgrade for my 98 but I am not ready to buy now.

some people don't get a cel, but some do. I am looking for two ecu's-one 96 manual, and one auto. The manual is a little harder to find, but the auto's i have been told are a dime a dozen...THe reason for two is i will continue to have my oem one, so that if i sell the car, or leave to go out of town, i can swap the ecu's out so that my dad won't get any ideas about racing my car

Happy easter!

Price might be unknown, but I am willing to put down 700 plus if they actually made a 98 specific ECU.

Is anyone talking to JWT yet? If so let us know... If not I can call them and see what we need to do to put this on the fast track. (Fast track might not be the right word for a 97-98 ECU LOL)

I have a little experience with helping to organize group deals for UPRD/ Gforce ECU upgrades back when I had my 96. I am sure Cheston can vouch for that lol

inside of a '98 ECU

Does anybody have an open 98 box they can take a pic of? I need a shot of the board and chip inside (with labeling). Please e-mail me thanks. (Backup plan to JWT)

I spoke to Jim Wolf yesterday... No not the company, the man himself. According to him, it takes 35k to build an ECU, and while he does intend to finish up the 4th gens, it definitely won't be this season, so I would say, at the earliest, 10-12 months from now.
He was very frank, and very honest, Nissan made his life difficult by changing the ECU's so much, so he is at a major disadvantage here.

The only way you guys will be able to move higher on the totem pole is to bring 40 or 50 cash in hand buyers to the table, possibly pay a deposit, etc. And even then I don't know if he would scrap some of his other plans for the remainder of the season. This is maxima.org and maxima owners we are dealing with here. Everyone posts that they are ready to buy, they are in, they have all sorts of cash ready to go etc.. etc... and when it comes time to pony up the cash people start bailing left and right. The list of 30 or so, cash ready members would rapidly shrink to 10, it's happened before and most likely will again

I think Jim knows that, hence the lack of urgency to get the ECU's done, the maxima market is not his core business.

Thanks for talking with him.
I attempted to make a thread to accumulate more buyers, but my thread was locked. I would like to know why that thread was locked and why actually....

I now understand the cost involved....
one thing...
how hard would it be for JWT to disable the o2 sensor codes or any other trouble codes on a 96 ECU so that I can use it in a 97?
How do you tell if your 97 is compatible with a 96 ecu?

First, thanks for talking to Jim I called twice and couldn't get a decent answer. Apparently MAx's aren't on the high priority list right now.

Second: Can ANYONE DEFINITIVELY tell me if a 96 ECU will work on a 98? CEL or no CEL... I would like a REAL answer. I have a MEVI on the way and REALLY want to use it to the fullest potential. I plan on installing bigger (550)ninjectors and JTW can reprogram the ECU to accomodate them with the bigger fuel pump.

550 cc? you will have way way too much fuel for a N/A car. I don't think you can make enough HP in a N/A car to warrant installing 370cc
300TT injectors. Factory injectors do not become a weak point till FI'd and putting down better than 375 hp. I am installing 370 cc injectors, Walbro 255LPH high pressure fuel pump and SAFC on my N/A max only as a prelude to this summers turbo install.

Yes it will. Mardigras has a 96 ECU in his 98 Max, and Nealoc ran a 98 ECU in his 96 before.

There are people that worry about the digital dash on98's, however this is controled by ram chips on the dash itself so it has nothing to do with the ECU.

Since it doesn't look like JWT will have anything for us for a year (if they ever even do), I will be getting a 95-96 5spd ECU and getting it upgraded for my car. Then I will figure out how to rewire the rear O2 sensor to get rid of the CEL. Only thing is you might have to change back to the OEM ECU for yearly inspections depending on how your inspections are done.

Hope this helps!

Dude... The injectors will kill your performance if your staying N/A plus I don't think that JWT has an N/A ecu cal'd for the 555's. That is their top level boost tune, and you will be nowhere near that.

the 96 ECU will work on a 98, but you will definitely get a CEL.

300TT injectors. Factory injectors do not become a weak point till FI'd and putting down better than 375 hp. I am installing 370 cc injectors, Walbro 255LPH high pressure fuel pump and SAFC on my N/A max only as a prelude to this summers turbo install.

You are correct... but keep in mind you will not be able to control the 370's with just an AFC... it won't happen, you will need to drop base fuel pressure, or get the ECU from JWT. If you are going to go the JWT route, I suggest you look into local junkyards for a TTz MAF. It gives you a higher HP peak according to JWT vs. using the Maxima MAF.
