Do you wear a helmet when you race?

I race at Test & Tune. One of my co-workers asked me if I wore a helmet when I raced. I don't. She asked me why not? I didn't have a real good answer... Do y'all wear a helmet/neck brace? What brands? Styles? Colors? Please advise. Thank you.

YES.

I use a motorcycle helmet. It does not get good ventilation like the car-oriented ones (I have to leave the shield open), but the motorcycle ones are much easier to come by and cheaper. Shoei RF-700 Rage.

NHRA rules dictate what safety equipment is required based on how fast your car is. I know I'm nowhere close to needing a helmet.

How fast do you have to be for them to make you were a helmet? 13's?

I think it would be close to being in the 11's, i think with that speed you must have a rollcage to.

I told her I am not required to wear a helmet, because one must break into the 12's before that happens. Never-the-less, she wanted to know why *every* racer wouldn't wear a helmet anyway, the rules be damned! It made me think twice about it. If something did go horribly wrong with my car at 95 mph, I'd be in nearly as much peril as if something went bad at 108 mph. It's eating at me. I need to get a helmet now...

Umm, No. A Helmet is required at 13.99 or quicker. A rollBAR is required for vehicles running 11.99 or quicker unless it's a vert, then a bar is required at 13.99 or quicker. A rollCAGE is required at 10.99 or quicker OR at trap speeds greater than 134MPH. The bar and cage rules can vary depending on your firewall and interior paneling.

Here at the Memphis MotorSports Park, you have to run 12.99 or faster before an approved helmet *must* be worn. If 13.99 was the threshold, then most all of the stock Ford and Chevy drivers would have to wear a helmet. I'm pretty sure about that, but not 100%...

No, it's not my girlfriend's car, and yes, it's un-real!

If a track isn't sanctioned than I suppose anything is possible but those are the NHRA IHRA guidelines and most tracks adhere to them sanctioned or not because they are basic and established.

At Kansas City International Raceway (NHRA sanctioned) we all have to wear helmets, regardless of how fast your car is. If you run 11s, you wear a helmet. If you run 18s, you wear a helmet. Rollbar is required for 11.99.

I don't doubt that some tracks abide by much stricter policies. If I owned a track I would do the same thing. But if a track runs off of minimum regulations and wants to maintain it's sanctioning those are the requirements in most cases. Most tracks also require that you sign waivers. It looks like Speedworld at Orlando is in a world of hurt because of what happened to my friend Steve last weekend during the Pro Mod 5.0 races at Fun Ford Weekend. They didn't require that any waivers were signed, there was no emergency staff present, and the track crew were not prepared for a major accident, as a result of this, more than one racer could have died. So far it has been said that Steve died of massive head injuries on impact. This is a class where the cars are running an average of 180MPH. You would think such a high profile track would be better prepared. If you ask me, if you are on the track, you should have a helmet on.

I'm pretty sure I was wrong about the 12.99. I looked at a listing of NHRA rules, and 13.99 was stated as the threshold for helmet wear. I know the Memphis MotorSorts Park is a sanctioned track, so they must observe the 13.99 threshold. Looks like I was going to need a helmet anyway... Thanks to all.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend Steve. That's just awful. Thank you for your advice, which I will heed. I wish you well.

He was a good guy and one of the best racers. I have seen a video of that wreck and pictures of the aftermath. I am not surprised that he didn't make it. The fact that he didn't take Rimmer out with him blew my mind. It's a dangerous sport, there is no arguing that. My Dad says I am dangerous and clumsy enough without tempting fate by driving over 100 miles an hour on purpose...I'm going to do it no matter what, so I do whatever I can to minimize the risk.

I just left the Simpson Race Products website. I placed an order for a white "Super Voyager Y" helmet. I should have it by mid-week. I am going to feel safer next time I pull up to the line, that's for sure. Thanks again to everyone.

NJ requires all racers, regardless of ETs, to wear a helmet for drag racing.

In autocrossing, everyone wears an M or Snell rated helmet regardless. Helmets are cheap insurance for your life/health.

At the track I race at, it is 13.99. So far, Ive only touched 14.6 so I'm a far ways off from needing one. My friend's 96 corvette runs high 12s, flat 13s and he's got a really huge dorky looking one. Fortunately I've got my motorcycle helmet. Its full face so it feels kinda wierd having it on inside the car, but I'd rather have full face then open.
