Auto Storage BS

Hey Guy/Gals I was involved in a pretty bad accident driving a Maxima (not mine) when a young lady heading the opposite direction decided to turn directly in front of me approx no more than 50ft away and we're both traveling at approx 40-45 mph....Anyway I'm a little sore but the Maxima is a tough ****!!!! I stayed squared up on her cause I had no time to do nothing but try to brake...anyway! I got all my tools out of the car cause I don't trust tow truck drivers....but I left my work bag in the car with my work ID's and school books, flashdrives and now the auto storage won't let me get my personal property without a title or registration....So I've filled out a form and the ***** is still saying He'll only let me get my ID, not my work bag no more no less! I wanted too punch him in the face so bad! But i don't need any extra trouble!

Who's paying for the storage, your insurance company? If so, call them tell them you need immediate action regarding this problem. They should be able to make a phone call and square this away. The last thing the salvage yard wants to do is **** off a deep pocket client.

When a car is totalled, the salvage yard buys it from the insurance company at whatever the standard salvage price is (around $1500?). Anything that is in the car that the salvage yard can sell is just extra gravy for them, so they don't want let the people take stuff out.

I went through this same thing years ago when my car got totaled. I had a bunch of expensive electronic test equipment and computer parts in the car. Of course the salvage yard wouldn't let me remove it from the car. The insurance company's attitude was "not my problem". I worked for a Fortune 100 company at the time and they had to unleash the lawyers and lawsuits on the place in order to get it.

Good luck.

it varies from salvage yard to yard depending on their policy, but what I definitely would do is get with your insurance company and let them know if your issue, and also speak to the management of the yard directly as well since you need to get your personal effect removed from the car. However I do know what they do not allow is remove anything that is part of the car, in other words, that is attached or bolted to the car, that is not allowed. I know it sucks for those who had modded their cars or added some things to their vehicle is considered as the part of the car is prohibited from removing it from the car.

First and most important glad to hear your o.k and not badly hurt Cmax. FanaticMadMax I'm not sure what the rules are in the U.S but I believe here in Canada you have an option to buy the car back from the insurance company before it goes to the yard if it's a write off.

The thing is, if the car hasn't been totaled, it's still yours. Insurance company hasn't paid you outright for it, therefore it is yours period. Hell get a police officer and a local news crew to escort you in if they are standing firm. As far as the bolt on stuff, again, it's still your car until the insurance company pays you for it. Salvage yard has nothing to say about it, all they do right now is store the car for a daily fee.

I remember when my Acura was totaled, the salvage yard was being a PIA about my dad going and getting everything from the car. But insurance wasn't paying anything (liability only) and my dad ended up getting the navigation/radio, the EZ pass, and whatever else way still there.

next time...don't let them tow it to their yard. it's your property...have them tow it back home or to a shop that you trust. you're paying for towing...you call the shots on where it's getting towed to.

last wreck i had the tow truck driver said "oh i can tow this back to our shop and get you an estimate"...no thanks buddy i like you to tow it where "I" want it towed to. that's it...no other discussion needed.
