washing air filter?

while cleaning my engine i realized how dirty my air filter was... can i possibly wash it instead of buying a new one..it is a aftermarket cone filter

What kind of aftermarket cone? Some require oiling after cleaning and some don't.

The "cheap" aftermarket cone filters you get at your local auto parts stores are better being thrown away. If it's a washable one, such as K&N, then you can of course wash it and re-oil it. Buy the Recharge kit and follow the directions. DO NOT use compressed air on it as it can damage it unless you are really careful.
