400 miles isn't a road trip...that's a leisure drive...

Cars don't feel the heat index, only the heat itself.

Check the oil, make sure the coolant is full and your A/C works.

Have a nice drive...

Sure to the typical uneducated org member, but think about it... 400 miles, doing 70mph i what? a little over 4hrs?

How long is your total commute to and from work? Then how much time to you spend in your car on a daily basis?

You will soon realise what us two mean....

You're math is a little loose...you'd be looking at around 6 hours drive time if you can average 70 mph with just a couple brief stops. But yeah my point was it's only a quarter day's drive, wouldn't even require a second driver or a hotel stop. Get it over 8 hours, and more like 600+ miles, now we're talking the entry level road trip. Try going 2600 miles right at 46 hours...now THAT's a road trip! Did that once myself, and took 3 days to recover. Vowed never to do that unless the fuzz is on my tail...

Typo, i'm falling asleep at work here, you're right, on the hrs... Either way, short drive none-the less, nowhere near long enough for serious problems to expose themselves.

i don't do that crazy stuff man!!!! I only do 8-9hrs a day MAX, i did 10hrs once and hated my life afterwards.

My epic road trip was...
Houston, TX->Little Rock, AR->Nashville, TN->ST Louis, MO for Day one (7 states in one day woohoo),
day two's leg was STL->KC, KS,->Topeka, KS->Manhattan, KS for day 2...
then day 3 was Manhattan, KS->OKC, OK-> Eunid, OK->College Station, TX...
then day 4 was CStat to Houston.

3 drivers, mostly me cause the other two were terrified of driving manual.

Back to the original question, schedule your trip to avoid rush-hour's as you're entering metropolitan area's, and consider first thing in the morning driving, air is cooler, road is cooler, makes for less harsh condition for the car no doubt.

Avoid driving in the dark, but starting right before the sun comes up is the best time to get started. Get's you out of the local city before traffic builds, and the sun is coming up little by little. However, if you're headed due east, sun in the face is going to be harsh on you and the other drivers on the road with you...something else to think about.

+ Infinity, I hate driving East/West. I always end up fighting the sun, sometimes avoiding traffic is impossible though.

So, precautions eh?

Take 2-3 gals of Dist. Water. One quart of ATF and Motor Oil, Funnel, basic tools, it's what I always travel with. Check your tires, and your off to your out of town mini-trip.

On top of what everyone else had said about preparing for your road trip, also check out your insurance to see if they have a road side assistance service at additional cost. I'm w/Geico and I only pay about $3 or $4 extra per month for this service. It's similar to AAA.

Either way, it's good to know that you're prepping for this trip. I hope you have a safe trip.
