you dont have to get it though

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to get the new Empire Gold plates when I renew my vehicle registration?
No. You will be allowed to keep your current plates when you renew your registration.

While the mandatory reissuance of license plates has been cancelled, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin issuing new Empire Gold (blue and gold) vehicle plates in place of the current Empire (blue and white) plates beginning April 1, 2010. The Empire Gold plates will be phased in gradually as the stock of Empire plates is depleted. Even though your Empire (blue and white) plates will still be valid on your vehicle, those plates will no longer be issued by the DMV when current stocks are gone.
In other words, you can keep your blue and white tag on your car. You won't have to get a new one unless you get a new car. That's what I'm getting from it.

I don't think they look that bad, honestly. I was expecting to come in here and find a mandatory law stating all NY vehicles had to have a tag on their hood when you said your car wasn't a taxi cab.

One thing I don't miss about living in NY...they have a "fee" for every. Effing. Thing.

Yeah, they were the 80s plates until replaced by the Liberty plates.

Wikipedia to the rescue! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle...es_of_New_York

I actually remember the old yellow-on-black on my father's 1966 AMC Rambler. Hideous color scheme (on a hideous car, for that matter.)

OP, you're getting your panties all bunched up for nothing. It's optional. And even if it weren't, what's the big deal? There are far more important events in life to worry about.

I like the new tags...they remind me of the tags when I was a kid and first started driving!

May move back to NY just to get them!

^^Search. The answer is yes. 5 speed VLSD.

Pretty old news. Sure, they don't look that bad in a pic. You have to really see them in person to see how hideous they are.

Honestly I don't think they're that bad, but when my registrations are up I'll be keeping my current plates.
