Buy-Back Program for MSRP

i've already searched and seen the posts about how this is stuff the dealership usually sends out to try to get you to trade in your almost payed off car for something else with many more payemnts.

but in the case, my postcard says they're willing to offer me in credit towards a new 2008 Nissan of my coice, 100% of the base model MSRP of course with deductions for anything they see to be wrong with car

so i did some research and the base MSRP for a 98 maxima is just over $21k. im thinking ill get just under 20k after their deductions, or will i? is this legit? should i go there just to check it out?

EDIT: this is exactly what the postcard says:

100% reimbursement for your trade-in.
This is the most aggressive Nissan Incentive Program to hit the New Jersey Market and it's only available to 1997-2007 Model Year Trade-In Owners in your area. Any customer trading a 1997-2007 model will receive 100% of the factory base model MSRP when you trade for a new 2008 Nissan or quality pre-owned vehicle. A fresh shipment of new Nissans has arrived for this special program.

Xavier, Just bring in your 1998 Nissan Maxima to the factory authorized location below. Pick out a Nissan model you want to buy or lease. Your authorized dealer has been provided by the N.A.D.A. with the factory's base model MSRP List Price on the vehicle you are currently driving. All customers will receive 100% of the base model MSRP in trade toward a new Nissan. Similar arrangements will be made for lease customers.

This assistance program is designed exclusively for customers in your area. Obviously, your current vehicle must be in safe operating condition, with normal wear and tear. The only adjustments will be made for mileage and reconditioning. We are not here to 'nitpick' your trade-in; we are here to sell new Nissans at prices that are much, much lower than you would normally expect. Due to this event, Nissan has allowed us to offer 1%** APR on select new in-stock Nissans.

Thats word for word AND i only have until June 30th to make a decision according to this thing.

EDIT****
so i went there today and he sat me down ran a trade appraisal and said they give me $1000 tops for the car. so i continued to ask about the 100% buy back thing and he in the end just told me it was something they did to get the customer into the dealership.
sigh

but in other news, they had just received the 09 in the morning, my god that thing is beautiful, it's really just something else in person. the MSRP on the info sticker on the window said $31,999 but the salesman kept saying the base price was about 28. sat in and all, it's great.

It's what your car will get at an auction. Check there for the latest prices.

I think you are reading it incorrectly. A Nissan dealership is not going to buy a used 98 Maxima from you for $20k. You would be lucky to get a couple thousand for a trade in on your 98.

MSRP is the price of the Max without any options at all.

Take your Max to the dealership and see what happens. The Nissan dealership I used to work for did this promo and it worked for some people.

woah, so i might actually be able to get like at least 15k towards a new car?? i was afraid of this. I've feared getting a good deal for my max for a while now. if i did get this deal, theres no way i could afford a new max, BUT it would easily pay for a new altima or sentra (you don't know how much it hurts for me to say that). gahhh. to everyone else its just a no brainer, but i love my max.

Go down to the dealership where the promo is at and have them evaluate your car. You can always say no and walk away. Tell them you want to see what the value of your Max really is without running your credit. The dealership doesn't have to run your credit to do this.

^^^

I'd love to see what the dealer offers you for your Max.

With the "mileage and reconditioning" clause, they are going to offer you peanuts for your Max, just like always. What you received is probably just another gimmick to get you there...

Official name is Lakeshore Blue (it's a blue grey mix). The color is exclusive to 99's.

yup, going to show up at the dealer first thing in the morning. the only way this will work for me is if they offer me around 20k toward a new 08 and then i'd have to accept it and probably take w/e i can get without paying any money, if that would be possible.

lol since i'd be so upset with having to part with it, i would resell w/e car i just got for free for the 20k or so that its worth (probably an altima or a sentra) THEN go back to the dealer and by back my maxima for like 5k and put the other 15k into paying for school!!! wooo!!

and then i'll wake up... but yea, dealership first thing in the morning.

The Maxima is a reliable car. I highly recommend everyone to do what I did--save up for the car you want, but be patient. When you get that car, keep the Maxima as a daily driver, and give your new car a break. Mine is still going strong at 161k. Let's say a 1998 Maxima is worth from 1-2k. Why take that little for it when it's a 100% reliable vehicle? I've had mine 10 1/2 years and every mile I drive it today it keeps that mile off my newer car. Edmunds says the new car costs 91 cents/mile to operate--now how much is that 1k Maxima worth?

I got something similar in the mail before my last few payments were due. They basically said the same thing and offered me not even half of what I paid for the car 4 years earlier.
