We gotta be realistic here ... if I had 2 settle for an auto ... 100 times out of 100 I would take the TL-S ... I'd even that the CL-Type S over my 2000 Maxima cuz it kicks my as$ ... but maybe not the 6 speed 2002 ...

Better is perhaps not a good word. I bellive it is a better value than the I30... I know I would rather pay 29 Grand for the TL-S then a loaded Max/I30. Faster then the I30/Max in auto, YES! I35 might be a closer match, but the TL is still my choice.
But, one cannot go wrong with either one of these, all are very reliable automobiles.

I like to see if Maxima owner can actually admit it.

# of cams don't really matter. It's how many valves per cylinder they have. I think both have 4 valves/cylinder? Just that Acura can actuate them w/ less cams.

The Acura's are more stylish, the Max more sporty. The the price was closer, and the CLS/TLS were better built, I would consider them more.
I was looking at the TLS and Max and the $ difference here is $2500 US. The thing that bothered me were the amount of posts at the TLS forum discussing problems with rotors, tranny, squeaks, squeals, and thin paint. When a number of owners call their own car a POS then you start to wonder. No doubt, very nice looking car, fast, and classy.

I just read the new Motor Trend and their article on entry-level luxury sedans. The new I35 was pretty dissapointing. Some quotes from the article include: "As vanilla as it gets" , "A maxima with a different badge" , "Does little to distinguish it from the rest of the sedan world" , "The interior is rather Maxima-ish in look and feel, and the simplicity of the plasticky waterfall dash did little to win our editors' praise", "The Infiniti engineers measured and copied the shock and spring rates of a BMW, but never actually drove one"
All that for a sticker of around $36K. So the bottom line is save your money and get a Maxima, but if you got some extra money, get the TL-S. The TL-S is simply an amazing car. Spend a week driving this car, and I promise that you will be thoroughly impressed. Push the TL-S to 7000 RPM's a few times and you'll be hooked.

Ok...I've come across this kinda debate many times before...first started with my friend who bought a 2001 CL TypeS, he beat my 98 I30 by two car lengths from standstill. And when I raced with him again in a 2001 Maxima GXE, he beat me again but only by half car length.. I've test-driven 2002 Maxima's and I35's many times, also test-driven TL TypeS couple times and my friend's CL TypeS a few times...I can tell you the 2002 Maxima AT is faster than any TypeS! Plus Maxima has a more aggressive look, better interior materials, sharper handling; same cabin-quiteness and ride-quality. Don't compare any TL or CL to I35, cuz neither of those cars come close to the I35 in terms of look, luxury, comfort, quiteness, reliability, and dealer services. And they have comparable performance but where the I35 shifts gears smoother. TL is only better than a Maxima in terms of luxury, but Acura uses cheap materials just like Honda and Toyota does. Hard leather seats smell like vinyl/rubber, cheap plastic materials look like they'll "melt" after a certain period of time...TL is better? Gimme a break......

MT said Infiniti copied BMW's spring rates? Where da f**k did they get that info? Proof? And how da f**k did they know that Infiniti engineers never drove a BMW? I've test-driven 328 and 330, and I35 rides better! MT claimed an I35 costs $36,000 that's bull$hit! I can get one fully-loaded for $35,000 outta door! I recall when they tested an old I30's 0-60 time was 8.1 or 8.2sec, but I've tested my car several times and I got 7.4sec! Those idiots need to learn how to drive! MT is just full of ****, I don't think us proud Nissan owners need to give a damn about MT's opinions, test-drive I35/Maxima/TL/CL as many times as you can and justify for yoselves...or if you got cash, buy an I35 and a TL and compare them.
