You don't have lips??

Okay all jokes aside..

I got my F/R 300zx brakes in the mail and they have been painted with a caliper paint. It's kind of chipping off. But blah anyhow, It appears that they have been maybe rebuilt at least once before, are there any stand-out things that I should watch out for? Also I have no idea how to go about re-assembly of these. They came with a bag with a bunch of hardware and shims. Time to play brake puzzle -3D?

Get remanufactured ones from an auto parts store, then trade in the 300zx calipers.

You should let me know when you do this install I would love to give a hand. Are you running the cobra rotors?

so what's the verdict on this? has anyone completed this...and has pics of the 2 piston J30/Q45 calipers? has anyone ever weighed the Z32 calipers vs. our stock ones, vs. the 2 piston j/q calipers?

I would think that 2 pistons wouldn't knock our brake bias too far out of whack like the Z32 4 piston front calipers do...!

Mike tell me what your looking for and i will get it. I have a set of Z32 calipers in the mail and i have a pair of Q45 calipers at my house. The Q and J caliper are both 2 pistion but from my observations they are quite different.
I will get you weights and pics once i have eveything this weekend.

What benefits does upgrading your brakes have besides if you track and dont want brake fade? B/c once you lock up your brakes, the only other factor to help you stop is how good your tires are. so how does having a bigger rotor/more pistons help you stop faster?

Can someone enlighten me more?

More braking power (as you have to upgrade wheels/tires anyway). WAY better modulation. Ever try to modulate your brakes right on the edge of lockup? More pistons = way better braking feel.

5th gens have a excelent ABS system that works great, so there will be no lock up. Main advantage is larger rotors are able to dissipate heat faster than the smaller ones, plus provide more surface area for the larger brake pads to grab on to. Problem with alot of brake kits is they use heavier rotors than stock which adds rotational mass to the wheels, which in turns means a slower car. ALOT of times big brake kits do not work as well as OEM brake setups, and this is why I am rocking OEM brakes as my previous BBK didn't do anything for me - just blingage.

the same issue I have, I wonder if more clamping force via an extension arm/bracket or more pistons used to relocate Z32 or J30 calipers would be useful since even with my r compounds, I can still get my ABS to come on in full stride on an autoX or road coarse with just the A34 rotors, calipers, and hawk HPS pads...which kinda leaves me to not desire anymore clamping force since my current brakes can still out do any amount of tire grip I can throw at it, although I might be speaking to soon as I am going to be experimenting with much larger widths this season...

I just put on my BBK. 13" cobra rotors, using '96 Q45 calipers with the Q45 torque arm.

First of all the rotors rub the caliper bracket. I then put on my 20MM spacers and mounted the wheel and was really disappointed on what I saw.

The caliper has just enough room, you can barely slide a credit card betweent he caliper and wheel. The only issue, the passenger side wheel weights rub straight against the caliper.

I have looked at other pics with 17s and BBKs and every picture I have looked at has a lot more clearance than I do.

I have Motegi DP6 17x7s. I am really frustrated right now. I followed, Karim's write up. I took pics, but it was getting dark and they did not turn out well.

going back a bit, so has anyone done a full J/Q swap?
i want to do this but don't want to have to machine the rotors. may have to go ahead and just do it, and fix any problems that come up along the way

What do you mean "full"? Calipers and stock J/Q rotors? Yes, some 3-gen guys have done it.

You mean 13" Cobra rotor and J/Q calipers? Yes, .org member Karim has done it and has a write up in the 4-gen section.

As far as your question goes, there is no way to mount the J/Q calipers AND the J/Q rotors w/o machining the rotor's dia down. If you buy my brackets/rings, you can mount the 13" Cobra rotors w/o machining them.

Last week I finally finished my Cobra/Q45 caliper BBK. Had a problem with the inner barrell of my 17s not clearing very well. So I took out the dremel and shaved part of the calipers down some.

Got the clearance I needed and the stopping power I wanted. This setup is nuts!

Same thing I did, my spokes wouldn't clear the calipers.

i have a good scale and iam in the process of weighing many maxima parts.i will get all the calipers weighed sooner or later sit tight .

so far i just weighed a Q45 2 piston ,the way i will weigh calipers is without pads and with the bracket it came with stock.for one of these calipers, its 11lbs 12.2 oz this is with a few inches of brake hose and some kind or abs wires

by the way these two i have are for sale.
