Questions about spring wrap...

Hey guys I am redoing my suspension tomorrow so I would appreciate it if I could have this info sometime tonight.

1. Has anybody ever had any problems with the plastic Radio Shack spiral cable wrap? (Lime's idea ) It seems like it would break under the pressure of the spring.

2. Should I wrap only the top and bottom coils or all of them? The only problem I see with wrapping all is that it would really reduce suspension travel since each coil would be so much wider.

3. What else do you guys use as spring wrap? Any comments?

Thanks,
-Cyrus

just the top couple coils where they touch. I personally dont use them or never had the need to use them but I put them on other peoples cars that I lowered to make them happy.

Good stuff Luke, the only problem is that he used vinyl whereas I am using plastic. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Yes it does, especially up front.

Front - Wrap the bottom coil and the 2nd one down from the top.
Rear - Only the bottom coil.

Go with OEM stuff, it will out last anything else. Check the FAQ section, I have P/N's posted for OEM stuff that seem to be cheap. (~$6 bucks or so from Courtesy Nissan)

I never had to do the fronts, but it's really great in the rears. You don't do the top coil, but the next 2, and same with the bottom.

Super Uber old bump from a veteran maxima.org member

If anyone is interested, logically, you can argue that wrapping more coils would NOT reduce suspension travel, but would not affect it at all! Suspension travel is from the bump stop at the top of the strut shaft to the bottom lip where the shaft enters the strut assembly.

Wrapping the coils with more spring wrap would actually INCREASE spring rate very slightly, since the coils will bottom out (deaden) sooner, and thus, you have less ACTIVE coils, meaning a stronger, stiffer rate.

Much of my logic is based off of this website:

http://www.stockcarproducts.com/spgtech.htm

hope that helps future searchers

i agree. wrapping the coils would slightly increase the diameter of the spring, but the inner coils do not touch and rub like the outter coils do. thus they can stand to be a bit wider all around.

something tells me to use a softer material for the wrap rather than something a bit stiffer. the softer may be less brittle and less likely to crack or shatter when being pinched with extreme force. OEM would probably be your best bet...

EDIT: wow, just realized the 2.5 year bump. he's probably already gotten around to that suspension install, right?
