How do you know if your torque wrench is accurate?

I was tightening my strut bolts (after removing brace) and the wrench wasn't clicking when I'd expected it to be at round about the right torque..

Instructions say its calibrated from the factory but up to the owner to keep it calibrated.. how do you go about that?

Click-type torque wrenches are usually rated for accuracy from 20%-100% of total capacity. If your desired torque falls below this range all bets are off. That's the best way to overtorque something.


To answer the original question you need need a calibration machine to be able to tell if it's off and to reset it. You could buy one, but it's FAR more cost-effective to have to have it done elsewhere. Does the manufacturer offer some sort of recalibration? What brand is it?

Put it in a vice horizontaly, and hang a known weight (say 50 lbs) from the handle, with the wrench set to the same torque, after doing the simple math for handle length. Check for "click".

Change fulcrum length closer and recheck for "click".
Change fulcrum length longer and recheck for "click".

Calculate the adjustment factor (if any) for YOUR wrench.

There's your calibration machine.
