Garage Storage Ideas - Overhead Storage

I have pretty high ceilings in my garage and was thinking about how to make use of the space (other than putting in a lift, which will not happen any time soon).

Anyone has these Onrax things or something similar in terms of overhead storage? Thoughts and comments?

I'm probably going to put some shelving along the rear wall and maybe a work bench plus pegboard along one of the side walls.

Yeah, I plan on doing that for the back wall, and maybe even one of the side walls. I just want to make some good use of all the air space I have above the garage door. I'll try to post a picture later.

You can replicate what they have built with some steel from HD or Lowes and a sheet of plywood. I never looked closely at the pics that you posted until now, but it basically mounts like a garage door opener.

Butt-simple to do.

I had my last garage setup exactly like this, great use of wasted space and I found the racks on sale at Target. Mine held up fine for ~2 years before I moved.

some dude built a big rack in my garage on the ceiling! I put all my car parts there!

overhead storage that you can raise/lower to load it up without a ladder.

If my garage overhead was higher than 9' or so I would...

Joel and I are so short, we should just leave the baskets on the floor.

For now, I'm going to do the custom racks on the side/rear wall like you guys, then see if I really need the extra storage up top. That can always wait until later. I also still have a basement storage room and closets.

I always thought 5'9" - 5'10" was average....

I would only install these in a truss roof. That may not be a problem, but it is something to think about. A lot of carpenters and weldors do this same thing for storing lumber and steel.(Respectively)

Not quite sure where you're going with this but yes you wouldn't want to anchor something like this in the drywall. That's why they include gigantor lagbolts for installation.

I would run an auxiliary beam with posts at each side of the garage. Let them support the weight rather than the floor of your bedroom/kitchen/whatever.

+1 on the truss ceiling. I wouldn't hang much weight from a standard 4x6 joist....

I built an overhead one out of wood. Made it 4x8 so one big piece of plywood wood fit nicely. I put it in a corner, so I used lag bolts to but a 2x4 on one wall and used the existing header on the other. I then attached 2x4's with lag bolts to every joist on the roof (Slanted, unfinished ceiling). These held another 2x4 parallel with the one on the wall, and then I put some across like slats.

Took an afternoon, cost under 50 bucks, and I only needed a hand from my dad on putting up the 4x8' plywood.

Then I moved.... :/
