mobil 1 5W-30 and their filter or a purolator and call it a day, im not about to pay over $30 for an oil change, i dont think royal purple is worth it when mobil 1 is comparably as good and is cheaper

Haha probably, I guess I am just too picky when it comes to this stuff. I used to pay $35 for some "services" at Grease Monkey just for them to fill up my car with some cruddy generic brand of oil that they won't give me details on because it is a company "secret"
And I think them vacuuming my car and cleaning the windows doesn't justify the price, either
But yeah I think I will just buy some M1 oil and filter and change it out and call it a day. All this debate is confusing.
I wish Rotella made a 30w. If you guys want to run it, I suggest the 5W synthetic. A 15 winter viscosity is probably too think especially with winter coming up.
This is a little out there but it seems like there is a Maxima racing brand oil? Sorry didn't do much research on this, but it seems like there is a oil made specifically for Maximas, I think...

It depends on where you live, how cold it gets, and if you park your car outside, but yes the 5w-40 is a better idea in a cold climate

15w weight is pretty thick anywhere in the country actually and there's no real reason to use it when there's a 5w available (that's actually within the oem recommended viscosity range). At startup, you want the oil up in the valvetrain asap.

Yes but the FSM (for my 01) says that 5w-30 is preferred for temps from -20 to 100 degrees, and 10w-30/40 is fine if temps dont go below 0 degrees. Now while it doesn't say anything about oil with a thicker cold weight you would be fine with a 15w-40 in temps over 32 degrees...
Now that being said i recommend the 5W-40 synthetic.

I'll have to respectfully disagree here. The FSM doesn't say you can't run 100w either but I think that would be a bad idea.
In the end, 15w would "probably" be okay as long as not that cold as you say. But with winter coming up, 32 deg is easy to get as soon as Oct. But again, why ice skate uphill when there's a 5w 40 made by the same brand? (Rotella)

I agree but I live in a part of the country where temps below 32 degrees are rather rare
Wow Shell Rotella is popular in my area, I went to Wal-Mart and ALL of the 5W weight is gone, and the Delo 400 was sold out, then I went to two different auto stores near my house and its all sold out!
The only things left were Quaker State and Pennzoil and Mobile1... darn...
Oh and I am not sure if its true but I asked the guy at the auto store if he had any 0W and he said that 0W is bad because its too runny and won't lubricate adequately until its warmer.

Theres nothing really wrong with running a 0w oil but most guys who run their cars hard (ie road courses etc) dont like it since the amount of VII (Viscosity Index Improver) is pretty high. Once VII's are 'used up' they are gone and the oil is always a lower weight oil.

Haha after seeing all those Delo 400 and Shell Rotella oils eaten up, I think I am a believer. You can tell what oil is good and whats bad by whats left on the shelves and whats sold out haha
I was over at the Subaru forums and it seems like Shell Rotella has lots of Zinc and stuff that is bad for the catalytic converter if your car is consuming oil. Not sure if it applies to Maximas since its a different engine and all but consuming oil...is consuming oil so, just another thing to think about.
But my car is fine as it doesn't consume oil so I am going to surely switch over to Rotella.

Yeah thats part of what makes it so great for protection. It isnt the best for cats, but its not going to kill them either.

You're right, high amounts of Zinc has been found to be harmful to catalytic converters, and your engine does not have to be consuming great amounts of oil for it to have an adverse effect. Diesel oils typically contain a more aggressive additive package to combat the effects of diesel combustion. High amounts of zinc in an oil won't kill the catalytic converter immediately, but it will affect it over time. And that's why the API significantly reduced the amount of Zinc that can be included in oils rated SM.

Haha after seeing all those Delo 400 and Shell Rotella oils eaten up,
Noticed the same at the walmarts and stores around here except the problem was they don't restock those oils as often as the other ones simply cause they don't sell as well. The same 4 bottles of rotella have been sitting at the closest walmart for almost 2 weeks now and they won't restock til 2 are left. Sucks cause they are out of the 5w and won't restock til the 15w are down to two. Don't know why...

Odd haha, but I just noticed that you can get Rotella T at any Shell gas station, the station near me, has all the weights in full stock!!!
I would have never expected to go to a gas station for my oil but it seems like that is the best place to get Rotella T if Wal-Mart is out.
gas stations will charge you more than anywhere else. Why? they know anyone who buys oil at a gas station probably needs it in a hurry so they'll charge a premium for it and take advantage of destitute drivers. I know autozone has Rotella too.

Aww
I didn't look at the price I was actually just buying gas when I spotted in the corner of my eye a shelf full of jugs and I glanced and "HEY! rotella t in 5W-30"
But yeah you are probably right, knowing how everything in gas stations are more expensive, especially food. I mean 4 dollars for a hot dog!!!!! This is an outrage!
May I ask why you guys are Running Roletta T 15w-40 or whatever it is for diesels? your gonna burn your cats out doing that. the only reason why subaru guys do it is because its good for the turbo, but even them have a risk of buring their cats out.
On a sidenote, I just looked at the link for the oil analysis from my350z, and I saw no oil recommendations on there. I just did an oil change, I used Castrol GTX 5w-30 with a Mobil 1 M1-110 filter.

Not entirely true. Zinc is hard on cats but its only in the last 5 or so years that zinc levels in 'automotive oil' have come down. What will happen is your cats will loose effectiveness ever so slowly...but they do that anyways. Its not that its just 'good for the turbo,' its that the oil is good against shear and offers superior wear protection to 'automotive oil.'
Yup apparently the things in the oil that makes it bad for our cats is exactly what makes it such a good oil, and good at protecting your engine.
I don't know how it compares to Mobil1 and Castrol, but for Rotella's price and what it has been said to do, I think that it is worth its weight in gold
I live in British Columbia and run Esso Extra XD3 0w-30 full synthetic and a Napa Gold filter. I don't believe this oil is available in the US, at least it wasn't a year or two ago.
I haven't been on this forum or BITOG much lately. When I started using it, it was raved about on BITOG. It is a diesel application. What attracted me to it was the fact that it consistently outperformed Mobil 1 on UOAs and is only about 2/3s the price.
It is only available in Canada at Esso bulk plants.
My car is a 95SE, 5-speed, with 79,850 mostly highway miles.

OT: Holy crap, you're back? I haven't seen anything from you in years.
I just had my tranny rebuilt 2 months ago as a result of the dreaded differential carrier bearing problem. All bearings and seals replaced. New clutch kit as well while the tranny was out, despite the fact it was good to go for a few more years.

Rotella T is reducing the amount of zinc now. But the anti-wear properties of zinc wasn't the only good reason to use this oil. It has a very robust additive package also.
Shell Rotella and Castrol Syntech both are excellent in Lubricant oils as the quality of the oils are very good and I hope these lubricants will increase the engine too.
switched around a couple of time and never had a problem with my engine... I just make sure I change my oil and filter every three months no matter the milege. Buy it when on sale so it's realy only my time that add up.
