While many filters provide acceptable performance, AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters are clearly the best in the industry. These filters are made with a premium grade, full synthetic nanofiber medium, making them the highest efficiency, longest lasting oil filters available for the auto/light truck market. While the Mobil-1 filter is a good product, AMSOIL Ea filters are more efficient at 20 microns than Mobil 1 filters are at 25 microns, and they're nearly twice as efficient as Mobil-1 filters are at removing particles of 10 microns in size.
M-1, Wix, Pure-One are all good performing, well constructed filters...just depends what you're looking for.
K&N's claim to fame is that they have a nut welded on the end of the filter...but the filtering medium is of the standard cellulose-type...marketing at its finest.

I believe Baldwin and Hastings are now one company...or at least both owned by the same larger corporation. Baldwin offers a wide variety of filters for various applications including passenger vehicle, heavy duty/commercial and agricultural use. While AMSOIL and Mobil-1 are top-tier filters, I believe believe Baldwins are a good quality, standard-tier filter that uses a standard cellulose filtering medium in their automotive line...comparable to an oem filter.

I learned that the fun way with Honda. Supposedly they're one of the "best" out there. They're made by FRAM. Wonderful.
My top 3:
1) Mobil 1
2) K&N - My friend uses them on his 10.04 second stock block Evo - If that's not a good enough reason, I don't know what is.
3) HAMP - I know, it's blasphemy - It handles a 10,000rpm motor, I'll stick by it.
4) OEM - I have a case of them... I'll use them.
Edit: If you want a rubber band holding the CARDBOARD internals of your oil filter together, I'd recommend using a FRAM/Penzoil.
