I am not a *expert* but I have done hours of research on the different syn's.

At the moment, I am using Vavoline (because of the cleaning materials in it) but I have heard that the chemicals are not entirely helpful, nor good for the engine. Mobil1 has been proven to last over 40,000 with change in the filter.

Royal Purple has been known to be amazing oil, but has not proven to be *better* than any other syn's. If you do your research, look for a "Base 4" oil for a full syn.

IMO Mobil1 will do the trick, and the Amsoil (I think that is correct) is about the best you can get for your buck.

Good Luck...

Be sure to use a FULLSYN oil Filter!!

BTW: The oil will out last the filter...meaning you can easily reuse the oil and only change the filter every other oil change.

x2...Only oil that has ever been put in my 08. Oh yeah, and it had a birthday a few days ago. 17,000+ miles already on it & still running like a champ using Royal Purple 5w30 with the K&N HP 1008 filter.

From my research ive read that mobil one is the best bang for your buck. I change every 5,000 and use a mobil 1 filter. On the other hand ive heard that royal purple is also good but the longevity isnt there(at least compared to mobil 1), but ive never tired it.

I have always put RP in my 06, it runs like a dream. 6,000 miles ago I switched to Ams to try it and for some reason it didnt feel the same. Last week I went back to RP and am very happy with my deciision. Now my 06 Sonata also gets the RP treatment. No Complaints so far after 57 K miles. Long long term negative I can't really tell for now I guess.

I've used royal purple in the last three cars I've owned. And I also use the K&N oil filter. The K&N oil filter can be hard to take back off even if the engine is cold. I now use the Mobil1 oil filter w royal purple. Royal Purple is a local company in my area. They're about 20 minutes from my house. It's the main reason I use them. Just showing some local support. I don't see any difference between them and any other synth. Now with my high mileage F 150 I saw a difference in the performance the first time I changed from reg oil to royal purple. But that could have been the case with any other synth. Good product all-in-all.

i have tried penz platnium, rp, and valvoline. i like all of them, however rp only seems to work well for the usual 3k miles before engine starts to seem sluggish. penzoil is good but has lots of extra cleaning agents to comp 4 quality. valvoline has been working just as good as the other two but has kept it's color longest. i checked my oil 3 days ago with 3200 miles since last change and oil looks new and smells fine. i was actually thinking about trying ENEOS 0w30 next oil change, has anyone used this oil? they claim 11hp gain from dyno. also gonna try this K22 fuel system cleaner everyone is swearing by. sorry got a little off subject hoped some of this helped

I've always used Mobile 1, but recently found out that they reduced the ZDDP content in the last few years.

Not sure what I'm going to change to, but am looking for suggestions. What similar oil has a better ZDDP content?

I have heard that one can just use a ZDDP additive made by GM.

The most commonly used anti-wear additive in motor oil is ZDDP. ZDDP contains both zinc and phosphorous components working together to provide anti-wear protection. Recently, there have been concerns that certain additives contained in motor oil could possibly reduce the life of emissions control systems, specifically catalytic converters. To preserve catalytic converter life, the API has limited/reduced phosphorous levels in motor oil. Current API SM and ILSAC GF-4 specs for gasoline engines have maximum and minimum phosphorous levels of 800 ppm and 600 ppm respectively for 0w-20, 5w-20, 0w-30, 5w-30 and 10w-30 motor oils. Other SAE grades do not have mandated limits.

High performance, modded, and engines with flat-tappets benefit from oils with superior film strength and anti-wear properties. AMSOIL offers several lubricants that contain higher levels of ZDDP…AMSOIL’s Premium Protection 10w-40 (AMO) and 20w-50 (ARO) motor oils contain phosphorous levels of 1265 ppm and 1266 ppm respectively; and 1378/1379 ppm of Zinc. Another alternative is AMSOIL Series 3000 5w-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil (HDD)…this particular oil is formulated to include gasoline engines requiring an API SL lubricant, including turbo-charged applications. AMSOIL HDD contains 1266/1379 ppm of phosphorous and zinc, respectively.

Please send me a PM if you would like more information or a quote on any of these products. Pls include your state of residence or zip code so I can determine the correct tax rate. Thanks.

I can't quite find it in the ginormous oil thread, but at what milage should we switch to synthetic? I only have about 4K on my 08. And what about the other fluids?

I had an Amsoil rep tell me to ask the Illinois Highway Patrol how they liked Royal Purple. Apparently it didn't serve them well.

Only if your engine has leaks. Otherwise stick with regular oils.

I used Royal Purple in my Mazda 626 since the local lube goons carried it and a customer of mine who raced in the NHRA Comp Eliminator division (held the national ET/speed record in C/A for nearly 2 years!) used it. When the lube goons stopped carrying Royal Purple, I switched to Mobil1 and my oil consumption was cut in half from a quart every 3000 miles to a quart every 6000 miles. Otherwise it seemed to be an excellent oil.

I've used RP for the past 2 years. I switched to Mobil1 a few months ago and It didnt fell the same. I also lost like 2mpg on avg with mobil1. Just switched back to RP and It feels lighter already. All oil prices have gone up; used to be 6.99 at Kragen, but now its 8.99. Got it from Walmart for 6.72 though =). And btw I just switched the oil filter from Mobil 108 to 110. The 110 is almost double the size, but half the price.

ive tried RP before, i think its too expensive when i can use mobil1 which is just as good. they also claim a 5hp increase or something to that effect, who cares, you wont feel that anyways. so i stick to mobil1 10w-30. i tried 5w-30, and i heard a ticking noise, and not injector ticking noise, so i went to 10w-30, noise gone, untill i blew my damn motor at 190k miles
