New Mobile 0w30???

So i noticed mobile came out with a new oil. Green lable and Cap. It comes in a few variations but i'm interested in the 0w30. It claims to be better then the factory recommend 5w30 and 10w30. Its full syntetic and says it saves gas (yeah right....). Anyway I wanted to know if it would be alright if i switched/tried this oil. I have used nothing but 5w30 for the past 3 years with either oem or mobile filter. Car has over 170k, would this be alright? Thanks to all the oil gurus

0w30 is actually really good. Try it and see for yourself.

I'm runnin it now and noticed a slight mpg improvement slight being the key word only like .5mpg 22 to 22.5mpg increase but anything helps with gas prices this high.

0W-20 Kendall

Okay - so, I got a bonified FREE Oil Change today: with Kendall FULL SYNTH 0W-20.
I couldn't pass it up....and I JUST happened to NEED it too.

I've never delved-into the "thinner" viscosity lube....but figured, what the hell.

Anybody have any comments about 0w-20 or Kendall full syn....please feel free to chime-in.

A 20-weight oil is fine if the engine were designed to run on it...I successfully used AMSOIL 5w-20 in our Honda for years...Ford also has gone to 5w-20 in many applications and I sell a lot of 0w-20 and 5w-20 for use in both Hondas and Fords.

A 20-weight is quite a bit thinner than a 30 weight oil is, and the thinner film of oil would cause me concern about the oil's ability to protect an engine designed for a 30-weight oil. Generally speaking, if the oil is too thin for the engine, bearing wear can increase...

If you're going to continue running it, I recommend you have the oil analyzed after a few thousand miles and see how it's doing

You will be OK switching to a 0w-30 if that's what you want to do. Both 0w-30 and 5w-30 meet the requirements/offer the protection of a 30 weight oil when hot; so with everything else being equal, they should offer equal protection. 0w-30 will offer better performance in cold weather (it will pump at a lower temperature) than a 5w-30 will.

Your question was geared toward viscosity only, but different manufacturers formulate their oils differently. So depending on the formulation of the products you are considering, you may get performance benefits with one product over another that is not specifically linked to viscosity.

I hear you, but such a small increase could be do to a number of factors including, but not limited to, how much gas you were able to pump into the tank on your previous fill, weather/temperature, traffic, speed, A/C on or off, etc. Assuming you ran your car 400 miles on the last tank, which would be essentially bone dry @ 22 mpg, a difference of only .4 gallons on the fill would give you a variation of .5 mpg. If you ran fewer miles before filling, it would take less of a variation in your fill to indicate a .5 mpg difference in your fuel economy...a variation of only .2 gallons on a 200 mile run would generate the same illusion. I regularly get a .5 mpg difference or more between tanks, and I check & record my gas consumption with each fill...I typically put ~450 miles per week/tank on my car.

IMO the best way to determine fuel economy is to record it over a long term and normalize/do a trend analysis of the readings. Unless you've done that, the difference could be due to a number of factors...

I dont record my mpg but do calculate at every fill up and consistatly get around 21-22mpg. I travel the same route to and from work every day and go about 350 miles on a tank and fill about 16 gallons each time when the light comes on. This was with no highway miles at all thats why I noticed it and it has been consistant the past 4 fill ups with one exception where I drove about 100 miles highway and got 23.2mpg on that tank. It is a slight inprovement but the true test will be when I'm closer to needing an oil change I will see how it truely performs. Will keep posted on my results. I'm about 1500 miles in so with in the next few weeks I expect the milage to drop slightly but we will see.
