04 max Oil quantity vs recommended?

Hey, for the 04, the recommended oil quantity is 4 liters with a filter change.

So I put in exactly 4 liters of oil, and when I check the oil, the level is at the bottom of the grid level (so it's low).

So what do you guys usually do? Since the grid is approx 1 liter from bottom to top, that would mean I need 500ml of oil, which seems alot compared to the recommended 4l.

What is your opinion on this?

I am using the larger Mobil 1 oil filter and find that I need to put in 5 quarts to get the level to the top line on the dipstick. When I used the OEM filter it was 4.5 quarts.

A quart is .946 liters -- so its not quite a full liter.

This is wrong. You should never over-fill your engine with motor oil. It can cause a number of problems like the crank shaft hitting the oil and causing it to develop foam.

You are much better underfilling the engine a half a quart than to over fill it by a half a quart.

Even though I know it will take about 5 quarts for my engine with the larger filter, I always start out with 4 quarts and then add extra oil to get the level up to the upper line on the dipstick. Better to be safe (and slow) than sorry (and fast).

adding an extra half quart to the engine will not harm it, most engines are tested in pre-production phases with an extra quart and less a quart

with the extra half quart, unless you have only read technical data relating to an engine you would realize in the real world the oil only sits in the pan until start up but while running half the oil is probably now coating the engine, it's virtually impossible for every quart to constantly be in the pan while running.

when referring to overfilling, it's more then a quart, where this half quart myth came from is a little odd

I put 5 quarts in with the M1-110 filter, I used the 108 but switched

I need to put 5 quarts in my VQ when using the M1-110 filter just to get to the fill line on the dipstick.

I disagree with your points on there not being a problem by overfilling by 1/2 quart. The full line on the dipstick is set for the engine running and the oil flowing around the engine (while running). You don't want the oil sump while running to still be too full of oil. That is more likely to be the case if you overfill the engine (even by 1/2 a quart) when it is not running.
