transmission fluid

I want to go to synthhetic tranny fluid what would be the best way to drain the fluid? could I just drain it in the pan and add new synthetic? i am using regular atf now? Im trying to get my auto tranny to last till I can find everything for a 5 speed swap

The "best" way to convert is to do a complete flush. The drain and refill process will do some good, but the fact of the matter is that you will only remove/replace about half of the old fluid. The drain/refill method requires several changes to raise the concentration of synthetics to the 90% or higher threshold where it will do the most good.
