Hard question to answer given the information you provided. Did you replace your transmission or service the one you have? 8 quarts sounds too little for a dry fill, and too much for a drain and refill service. However, if you did a flush and your dip stick is showing fluid level in the proper range, you've succeeded in replacing 8 quarts of your total capacity.

Not quite. If it's a simple drain and refill it will take considerably less than that. The torque converter holds quite a bit of fluid.

READ THE DIPSTICK!

Ideally the pan holds 4 Q and the TC another 5 Q giving the magic # of 9 Q.

The dipstick is still the final authority, especially when one doesn't know exactly how much fluid was drained. A tranny is never really completely empty unless it's brand spankin' new.

He siad he replaced the transmision(dont know if new). Question though also. If new dont you have to go through the gears/(park/d/r etc..) and then check fluid again?

well it was a used tranny that I got from lkqparts.com, and when I ran a carfax and the car was wrecked in 2005 so im guessing it had been sitting awhile, when we dropped the pan to change the gasket there was a lil bit of fluid sitting there, which is normal but otherwise than that it had been drained

Sounds like you severely overfilled the tranny. The only time a transmission is bone dry is if the pan, valve body, and torque converter etc. are drained. Just draining the pan only gets about half of the fluid out. The specifications found in service manuals refer to total system capacity, not how much to add for a drain+refill.

Also, the transmission fluid level should be checked with the engine running. You did this, right?

Was this with the engine running and tranny fluid warmed up?
