VQ30, using only 4 quarts...

Just wanted to confirm with you guys, will it be ok to drive about 5 miles with only 4 quarts of oil in the engine?

The reason I'm asking is because I don't feel like changing oil myself, and the shop will put either 4 or 5 quarts in it. 5 is obviously too much, but 4 could be too little even for a short trip home. (where I will be able to add the right amount of oil)

Thanks in advance!

yes 4 is fine, but what kind of shop would refuse to fill to the proper level? doesn't make sense. if they are using quart bottles instead of bulk they could put in 4.5 (or whatever it takes) and give you the remaining .5qt for top up.

Well it's not that they will put in either 4 or 5 quarts, I should have probably said that they will not put in exactly 4.25. (the way I want it to be done) so those guys are ok.

I changed my oil before, but since I really hate the procedure I decided that it worth to spend extra $15 and not have to do it myself.

The minimun specified by the FSM is 3 7/8 quarts so you are fine.

Remember it holds 4.25, however when changing oil, it never empties completely, I've found 4.25 to be too much oil. Normally 4.1 or there abouts is sufficient. And yes, I change the oil filter every time, and it drains for at least a few hours.

you know I dont trust people to change the oil. I go where I can watch them. I bring my own filter (9e000) , i bring the oil (i dont trust the oil is what they say it is) I use 5w-30 mobil 1, I bring all the OEM parts like Air Filters and the crushable washer for the drain plug and I watch them the whole time. I dont blame this guy. I think you can drive home on 4 qts and fill up the rest, but I would go somewhere that lets you bring your own oil and filter and washers and watch them do the work. Recently, JiffyLube was brutally exposed for not doing proper work, TRUST NO ONE.

The total engine oil capacity when there's no oil in the engine is 5 3/8 quarts. The 4 1/4 quart capacity that the FSM specifies already takes the amount of oil that stays in the motor during a typical oil change into consideration.

yea, I bring my oil and my oil filter... it's just they (just like anyone else) don't like to be told what exactly they have to do.

Cause his time/the trouble it takes is worth the extra 15$ as stated?

Anyways, why not bring a quart with you and just pull out and throw the extra 1/4 in?

yeah runnning on 4qts will be fine...honestly, unless you are excessively low, i.e. below the dip stick cross hatch....then you will be completely fine driving during the WHOLE OCI (oil change interval)....
