I would have to say that Fram makes good products. I have been using their oil filters for years but I thought I would see how their fuel filters hold up. So I picked one up at Walmart for $10, it has been working fine so far. So if you don't want to pay the $35 for the Nissan OEM filter just go with Fram..
Just wanted to mention these Hose Removal Pliers - I bought a pair when I put in my fuel filter, it made the job of getting the hoses off VERY EASY, and in fact I just used them this weekend to pull all the hoses off to get to and clean my throttle body -- here is a link on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-LIS47900...dp/B000GTMMJC/
The pliers work well yet just an fyi wrap a cloth or rag on the hoses before you use the pliers so as not to mar them upon removal. Additonally to facilitate removal in the future here is a trick apply a little armor all on your index finger and lightly coat the ends of the FF this will facilitate install and removal.
Just replaced the fuel filter on my '95 w/ ABS. Put in an OEM filter, using instructions here: http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/fuelfilter.html . Holy lord it's a tight space to work in. Putting the new filter in was super easy, took 10 min., didn't even need to grease the tubing. Getting the old one out sucked, took 1:45. I found it too hard to do the work with gloves on, so got gas all over my hands. Just wash right away w/ go-jo or similar and squeeze a lemon or orange in your hands to kill the gas smell.
Next time I would: buy the pliers that are mentioned above; cut the old hose clamps off using dykes (heavy duty wire cutters) and replace with new hose clamps.
Just need to get the hang of it, use a flat head to pry the hose up a bit away from the filter and twist and pull HARD on that sucker, its the dried up deposits that stop the hose from sliding off nicely
i put on a 300z filter and i am very happy with the results, should last 30 K miles
Try Dave B. from the Nissan dealer in Texas in the US. His info is all over the forums. Keep in mind the currency exchange from US dollar to CAN dollar so you prob won't find it same prices as some may have stated on the forums.
definitely took longer than I expected. i dropped the rectangular washer to the hose clamp too. buh... the 300ZX filter fits and works fine! thanks to courtesyparts.com
sorry no ABS on my max. I just removed my intake piping, which made it really easy to access the hoses/screws. I ended up cutting the exit hose b/c my back started to hurt from pulling the hoses (only hard part).
Do you have ABS? If so, do you think the larger filter was any harder to get in there with all the extra brake lines in front?
i have a 97 with ABS and have successfully put on a 300zx filter. the filter is bigger, but it does not interfere with the install, and the extra break lines are there but they dont seem to bother u during this job.
just remove a few hoses that are in the way (like the one going from the resonator to the iacv or whatever...)

OK, thanks both. Andrei, that was my feeling, having changed my fuel filter once it didn't seem like it would be any harder with a larger filter. I'll get the 300ZX next time...I'm due for a new filter soon.
how much miles did u put in the filter that u have on now?
what is the reason you are replacing it?
i ask because i cant get a clear understanding of how long this fuel filter lasts (both oem and 300zx)
people say 15K mi for OEM and 30K Mi for 300zx is that the mileage you are replacing yours at ? but none of this is in the manula or the FSM, it just shows how to do it but not the interval
ill be honest that the job was still a pita and i cut up my hands, but that had nothing to do with the size of the filter, but more with the seized on hoses. its A LOT easier with the intake removed (until the TB)
It wasn't easy but I've had much harder jobs on my Max. I have 15,000 on it now (OEM) but I won't get around to changing it for a while. You're right about the FSM, it doesn't list any changes for the filter up to 60K under either schedule. 15,000 is probably overkill for OEM and it depends on how dirty your gas is. Theoretically it could restrict maximum fuel flow so it's worth changing at some point. With a 300ZX filter I wouldn't think about changing it before 30K.
Yeah that makes sense, but why on earth would nissan not mention anything at all about this maintenance item? since the change interval occurs quite often, once a year or every 2 years or so...
i doubt its changed on many cars that are driven by people who are not on this site...
