Where to Buy MT-90 Locally

While Autozone, NAPA, etc. don't carry RedLine MT-90 or other RedLine products, Advance Auto Parts stores can special-order them for you. However the best prices can be found at sites such as www.myoilshop.com.

THis is good stuff and I read every post. I have used the Napa brand 80-90W GL4 and it worked poorly when cold. In fact when cold I can not get into 1 or 2 unless completely stopped. 1991 max 5 speed. I am replacing the Axles this weekend and I am going to try and find Amsoil 75-90 GL4 oil for the machine. I will post again and let you know if it is improved.

Someone else meantioned this also, but I was thinking of mixing MTL and MT-90 either 50/50 or 25/50 (MTL/MT-90) in my 02 6 speed. Is this a good idea? Has anyone else tried this? I'm in MI so I want something that will be good on those really cold mornings.

I'd stick with 100% synthetic -- either Redline or Amsoil.

Right. MTL and MT-90 are both 100% synthetic. They're just different grades. I'm just curious on the results of mixing the 2 in the Maxima.

I went with the amsoil gl4 75-90 weight on my 1991 Max SE. THe cold shift issue is much better and over all shifting is smoother and easier. I am satisified with the results and it was worth the trouble of getting the Amsoil. Redline is more available.

I dunno about the 4th gens, but for 5th gens it states in the manual that you should use GL-4 fluid. I asked the parts guy at my dealer and he said they use GL-5 and they don't sell it buy the bottle anyway. They order in bulk in big barrels.

Check your manual to see what you need.

Same for 3rd gen?

Would the same general advise go for an older 5 sp? (3rd gen 1992)? ... I assume recommended is GL 4 Redline MTL (Canada) 4.5 Litres (or is it Quarts?). Thanks

Help my poor tranny!

Hey everyone,

Just bought a 97 max SE 5 speed a little over a month ago. It has 105,000 miles on it and it seems that I am having some unwanted problems with it now. Now, from what I hear, the 4th gen maxs dont seem to have the best manual trannies in them. My buddy had a 96 and it has already had a new trans. My car has always made the subtle "jet-like" whine that alot of people claim to have in theirs. At the beginning of this week my gentle whine turned into a foot and pedal and shifter vibrating gnarl. It seems to be secondary to the initial whine almost like it is doubling over it. The sound gets much louder as you put the torque on. It happens the worst in 1st and still can be heard in 2nd and 3rd. Now, I also know that the drive shaft seals suck in these cars and this one does leak... so after I first noticed it, I checked the oil level. It was low. I went ahead and changed the oil out all together. The book tells me that 80/90 is an acceptable oil for this trans. Here is part of my question. I put LUCAS 80/90 oil in it. This was not an additive, it is actual heavy duty gear oil (its pretty thick stuff) which has me worried. Now the problems have become much worse. That whiny gnarl is getting much louder and the vibration worse. On top of that my speedo sensor died today. I was on the highway and it started pulsing up and down some then when I came to my next stop it never left zero again.(it sorta moves around down under 15 mph while going 70) Soooo... After reading these posts I am still not any less confused. If anyone could come up with some personal experience or answers it would be greatly appreciated. Im also going to look into this gl4 gl5 issue.

Is LUCAS OIL any good for these transmissions?
What is that whining noise?
Why did my speed sensor die? or is it even the speed sensor?

The dealer sells 75w-85 synthetic gear oil. It says nothing about gl-4 or gl-5 on te bottle. Is this ok to use in my 4th gen???

What brand is it? It should say GL-4 or GL-5 somewhere on the bottle.

If it doesn't say anything, you must assume it is GL-5 and stay away from it.

Re: PENNZOIL GEARPLUS SAE 80W-90 GL-4 Gear Lubricant

I've been using this stuff for 11 months now. I like it. It's been consistent - still a bit notchy until the engine is warmed up, but then the shifting is smooth. It's a good deal.

When I did mine, it took slightly less than 2.5 quarts. I had purchased 3.

Because Amisol did not have a GL-4 fluid when I did mine 18 months ago, I used the Redline. When I do it again (about every 30 K miles), I will be using Amisol.

There was another thead on this site that talked about leak problems -- possibly caused by one of the blend components of Redline. Amisol uses a different component, which (reportedly) does not tend to cause seal leaks.

At issue? I can't find ANY stores local that sell only GL-4 oil. All are asking if I've lost my marbles cause they can't find any proof that GL-5 will hurt my gearbox.
So please, point us to the proof! JOHNNY SAYS, or BILL POSTED, doesn't cut it. Facts please.
There's an active thread going-on in the 5th gen section regarding MT Grinding and synchro failure in 3rd gear. After reading this entire thread, I too am wondering where the PROOF / TECH SPECS are that indicate the requirement of GL-4 vs. GL-5 LUBE for our trannies.

Has anyone got it, and able to post it up - or direct us to the source???

I've been considering this as well. Personally I'm a tech, and I've been confused on how the additives in GL 5 will eat the syncros in a 4th gen.
It might just be not getting the clutch in all the way and grinding the gears every once in a while going into third *cause i do it sometimes* wear out that syncro.. idk but i'll look into it. There aren't any service bulletins about this either.

I changed the original fluid at just past 30 K miles. With the improvement in shifting, I should have done it between 20 and 25 K miles. Now that I have synthetic fluid in my trannie, I will probably go another 40 K miles or so before I change again (I just hit 52,500 miles) which would be between 70 and 75 K miles on the odometer.

im going to have my clutch changed soon and im going to be putting in new gear oil. i'm kind of caught up between the amsoil and the redline. which one from your guys experience is better. i live in alabama so cold is not tooo much of an issue. im more concerned about the heat we get down here. i also dont want to have to force to shift when cold.

which one would you guys choose?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks.

Between RL and Amsoil, Amsoil (MTG) hands down. No leaks.

When I changed my fluid (2 years ago this coming May), Amsoil did not have the proper spec product (I tried them first -- but they had discontinued the GL 4 fluid -- they have since gone back to making this fluid). Because of this, I ended up with Redline fluid. So far no leaks. But when I change again (after about 40 K miles) I will be going to Amsoil.

Getting ready to change my MT fluid. It's been about 40k since I last changed. Current mileage is 132k. There was a member who was a Amsoil distributor and I bought the Amsoil Series 2000 75-90 GL2-5 from him for like $4.70 a quart with additional shipping of $5.50. Pretty good deal. I've been searching Amsoil but don't think they make this anymore. It's been good stuff. I'd like to get more. Anyway, sent the guy an email. Maybe he's still there...it's been a couple of years. I'll post if he responds. Cheers
