i had a p0500 code and i replaced the VSS sensor.

i have a code reader (scan gauge 2, good stuff, by the way) that also reads some of the stuff the ECU monitors (intake temp, water temp, and so on). after i replaced the VSS sensor, i plugged the reader in, cleared the code and took a short drive. for the first minute, everything works, then i noticed the "mph" is "0", meaning the ECU is not getting data from VSS (my guess).

according to the code reader, my ECU is not getting any "speed" data because the "mph" is showing "0". the odd thing is, my speedometer still works. i don't understand how this is happening. any idea?

the test drive is short, so it didn't trigger the p0500 code, but i'm sure if i drive it long enough, the p0500 code will come on again. anyone has any idea what i'm dealing with here?

thanks.

I'll try to be brief, yet give enough info to ask for y'alls help... 1996 Maxi SE 5seed. Check engine light after starter replacement and induction clean/service(checked connections/hoses in drivers firewall area ;). Technician scanned error and said VSC (VSS)error...light on but no other performance issues other than cruise control won't indicate/engage now. He re-set erro light but said it would return after 2nd start...it did, after a short drive! Does the VSS have a wire connection on topside/rearward of my manual tranny with a "plug-in"/spade connection held in w/ one (10MM?) bolt?? If anyone has VSS part ## to share with info, it would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

So I took my car to my mechanic 2 days ago to check out an oil leak. I thought it was the crank seal at first, since it was leaking from the passenger side of the engine but it turns out it wasn't the seal, it was the rear valve cover gasket, and the front one is looking pretty bad as well. He quoted me $250 to replace both valve cover gaskets. I want to know if that's a decent price or not.

Folks of the MAX. I am experiencing possible engine trouble. (no codes) First, this has happened to me once before. Poor choice of gas. 93 from Walmart. Normally, it's good gas, I guess it just so happened to be not that day. Drove the car around for the day, went home, shut down and did not start back up until the next day, later in the evening. Then the car started to sputter. Thinking this was the exact experience I had with bad gas during the summer, I put in Stabilizer in the tank. Thinking this would have worked, nope. But, the very next day, started the car and it was fine. (still no codes) Well, over a course of 24 hrs, it started again upon starting the engine. (no codes) Ok. This is what I did for the past two weeks until now:
Changed the spark plugs, Ran Sea Form through the break line to the engine, changed out the air filter, fuel filter, oil change - including oil filter change, too, PVC valve, cleaned the TBI, cleaned the MAF sensor and then still no change.
I was suspecting KS or O2 sensor but I am not getting any codes. Check engine light not on.
Could be timing out, don't know enough about the 4th generation engine. So, guys and gals, can you help this old timer out?

This just started happening (three times) - car would just die when coming to a stop. It's preceded by weak power/acceleration/unwillingness to rev. After restarting, it runs fine!

Prior to this phenomenon, the car had died a coupla time while parking the car with steering at full lock. I figured it was the power steering being low on fluid. It was, so I topped that up. But now this.

Here is what we're dealing with:

97 Auto
Newer (year old) battery
Recent oil change
New fuel pump
New starter
Cleaned IACV
Probably doesn't matter, but this car was rear-ended three weeks ago with slight damage to the bumper and rear frame. Not sure if it might've affected the fuel system in any way (e.g. fuel pump, etc).

My first hunch is to change the fuel filter, and I've read somewhere here to check the MAF, right? What do I need to look for with the MAF?

Anyway, whatever info you might have will definitely be helpful to me. Cheers!

Hello all!

Hello all!

Here is my plan, read up on this on some different forums on the internet. Also, before I start I would like to say all my fuel delivery equipment is OEM. So I guess if you add additional wires to your fuel pump of a lower AWG gauging (10-12 gauge) ran directly from your battery you can get a little bit of extra fuel psi which can give you a bit of a boost when needed. Here is the idea, and please be critical because I want to know if this will harm my fuel pump before I go ahead and do it and also keep in mind that this is not a full-time setup, this is something you would use when you look over at a set of lights and see some punk in a civic with underglow who you want to show up (not that you'd need anything done to a Maxima to do that... ;) anyways...)

Here is the wiring setup that I will try to explain, much easier to understand if you could see the schematics I drew...

Supplies:

6-7 Female Spade Connectors

Inline Fuse Holder

30-Amp Fuse

30-Amp Relay

3-ft 14AWG Wire *approx.*

10-ft 10/12AWG Wire *approx.*

2/3 Prong Switch (12V/Ground or 12V/ACC/Ground)

5 Closed End 10/12AWG Connectors (Post Connections & Common Grounds)

Ok so,

from the battery (12V source) run a 10/12 Gauge wire, fused through the 30-Amp Fuse in the Inline Fuse Holder, directly to the 30/51 post on the 30-Amp Relay (this is your high current input). Run the 85 post of the 30-Amp Relay to a common ground with either 10/12 or 14 AWG wire (this is your relay ground). Run 10/12 AWG wire from the 87 post of the relay to the positive +12V post input on the fuel pump, which has a BLACK/YELLOW wire (this is your high current output). However do not replace the existing wire, just tap into it on the post. From the (-) ground on your fuel pump, which is a BLACK wire (no surprise there), run 10/12 AWG wire to a common ground. Lastly, run 14 AWG wire from the 86 post (this is your low-input trigger) to the positive (+) post on your switch if it is 2-prong or to the acc post on the switch (+) if it is 3-prong. Then use the remainder of your 14 AWG wire to run the (-) ground of your switch to a common ground.

I believe I got that typed out correctly but please mention any mistakes, also preferably you should use a 3-prong switch it seems a lot easier to me. Anywho, so the idea here is that your car will still remain reliant on your factory fuel pump wiring and relays because you have only tapped the wires as opposed to replacing them, and now you have a lower gauged wire (which can pass more current and power) ran via a switch to your fuel pump so that when you want to hit the drag strip or just eat some ricers light-to-light you can flip the switch, conveniently located on your dash, and have a few extra psi of fuel going to your injectors. Don't forget you have also lowered the resistance of the circuit by adding a lower gauged ground on your fuel pump as well. But if you understand basic common sense of life, you would know that if you run this switch in the ON positive all the time, you can definately expect to get some idle and running rich issues, possibly a burnt out fuel pump, maybe even a ****ed FPR or leaky injectors, so as always I do not recommend doing this to your car unless you are at your own will, and also you should understand how this setup works before diving into it. I wouldn't recommend this unless you have an I/H/E setup (intake/headers/exhaust) because the extra available air is there to compensate for the extra available fuel and also you should consider adding some additional grounds under the hood or buying a ground kit (because then you will have less resistance on your plugs and get a better spark ). I will post back after I have completed the setup and let you know if I flipped the switch and my car died from a bad idle, or if I spanked some more local chinese food to go... Hondas...

Sorry to leave you guys in suspense, I know, blue balls suck...

-Jeff ;)

P.S. If you, like me, have an air-fuel ratio gauge, take a peek at it before and after running the hot-wire, you will notice you will suddenly get richer, and no it's not because you won the lottery...

So Im doin some research and number calling. We all kno the VQ30 is bullet proof. But that darn Nissan 5spd certainly is not. I called a couple of places cuz im in the market for a new 4th gen to replace my last 4th gen that was totaled over the wknd (god rest its soul :rotz:). I found one with 185k mi 1996 5spd GLE for 2100 bucks. However the car already has a rebuilt tranny that is 3 yrs old and starting to make bearing "noises" from within the tranny. Apparently the tranny doesnt leak at all so not a differnectial issue maybe a bearing on the gear shaft. hell from the insurance money ima get :D ima jus replace it. Here are my options:

$1350 remanufactured tranny, from FLA, delivery included
or
$850 used tranny with 80k mi, from FLA. delivery included.

the Company says they test the reman and warranty both tranny for a yr.

$1350 for a gutted tranny with all new parts or a used one?? Or shd i jus call the dealer and get a brand spanking new one.

O and what is the difference between non-locking and locking transmissions and how do u kno which one is installed in yur car. THanks

Hey Guys ive done some searching around here and kind of came to a conclusion i just want to bounce it off of you guys first. ok so i have an Automatic Tranny with just over 160K Miles on it. The fluid was changed about 2 weeks ago. Just the other day i was leaving my house and all of the sudden it felt as if i were in N and the rpms shot up. I put the car in second then back to drive and it started going but once the rpms hit about 3.5 it felt as if it went into N again. So i did some searching and found people were having this problem in 3-4th gear and said they got the codes P0744. Well thats the code my car threw and its for the Torque Converter clutch circiut Intermittent. Would i be correct in saying the if i replace the Torque Converter that it would correct the problem? or would i be beter off just getting a new transmission?
Much Appreciated guys thanks!

okay so almost a year ago, my speedometer started acting up. It started that it would read fine when I was giving it gas, but as soon as I let off the throttle, the needle would fall to zero. next, on top of this; when i was going 90, it would only read about 50, and when i was going 50 it would read like 20 and it slowlly worked its way right down to zero where it now stays all the time. Also, the odometer stopped going up as well. once it finally went to zero, i got a code for speed sensor so i replaced the speed sensor. The spedometer worked great for about a day, then slowly did the exact same thing where it worked its way down to zero where it sits again. the needle wasn't jbouncing around at all, it would still read a constant speed, just extremely slower than i was actually going. Also, when it first started staying at zero, sometimes if i gave the throttle a little blip, it would jump up to about fifty, but then fall back to zero.
I replaced the speed sensor- that worked for maybe a day.
I checked the wires from the speed sensor all the way to the dash for connectivity- they're fine.
The odometer is still lit up, It just maybe goes up a km every few days if at all.
The needle sits at zero all the time, and never moves.
all that's left really is the actual gauge itself, but I still have the speed sensor code, so I'm at a loss for ideas.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
