Dynoying an auto

So I've been reading around and I've been seeing two different answers. One was that I should use 2nd gear to dyno but then I'd see another answer saying that I should use 3rd gear but start at around 3300rpm. Which one is true?

My Dyno Thread

3500 RPM, whatever speed that is in 3rd is a good start. See what works for you, i.e. when it DS's, etc.

Pronounced like how it's spelled, it describes how I feel about the auto sometimes.

But as stated in the previous link, 3rd gear is better.

3rd gear is best - start wherever you can so that the car doesn't downshift. Lock out the overdrive. I don't care about anything under 3000 RPM - that's where I launch from - but preferences may vary.

I guess I shall go test out what speed I need to be so that it won't downshift.

Heh. Yeah, 3rd gear makes sense seeing as us 6MTers use 4th gear. Looking forward to the results with that Cattman 3". Keep us posted man.

I dont think the A33B has an overdrive button. (PRND321 if i'm not mistaken) But does putting it in 3 essentially do the same thing as locking out OD? I'm talking about the effect is has on the torque converter by the way.

I assume its no different, but you never know.

3rd gear at about 70mph or 4k rpm go wot and it won't downshift and you'll get your peak #s the graph should be kinda flat without any major spikes or dips. Here's what mine looked like.

Definatly worth it the 70 to 100+ pull is amazing, it screams all the way it makes it seem the power is endless. TS and auto and yes that is my PB but I can definatly improve we'll see how I do on Wed. with the SRI.

Of course it matters...where do you think the power to spin up all that rotating mass comes from?
