My dyno day on the 5.5: Pics, Runfiles and Video

Well my dyno day could have been better. I took it to Ralph and John's. It took 5 hours to get it done. It was not the shop's fault though...Now before I explain what happened please understand I dont know too much about this and my explanation might not make any sense, I apologize. They were tuning the high level when it came to a point that the lines on the graph overlapped each other. They even tested it out and dumped 25% fuel with NO movement in the line. So they switched over to the lower chart and made adjustments there and fine tuned it. This made no sense to them so they called a tuning specialist down the block and he came in and basically said the VAFC2 is the wrong unit for the Maxima b/c it reads off of a different map...something like that. So they tried tuning the lower chart and got some movement in the line. I got my buddy on the phone and he spoke to the guys..something about tuning the throttle level after 75%? Im sorry I wish I could explain better.

My numbers were 230whp/240wtq for the listed mods: HS headers, Cattman Catback and test pipe. Not much going on in the performance area so do you think my numbers are decent? A real CAI and intake spacers are coming soon so I know my numbers will be better.

A total of 18 runs were done only b/c of the complications that arose when the line wouldn't budge...they experimented I guess.
First run was a test so I'll start with the 2nd run

And the last run was 230/240. The reason there were so many runs was b/c of the complication they had earlier so they just ended up tuning the lower chart. That was the only way they could even out the line

Those numbers look low to me. I would think you should be around 250whp.

Why would they be around 250whp? The only real power adding mod he has are headers. Finally got the tune done, i need to get that done after I get everything running right. Nice to see the difference in your untuned numbers compared to tuned.

well exhaust is being pushed out with no restrictions now but I still have a stock airbox with lots of restrictions...the owner said if I can find a way to get "real" cold air into the engine my numbers will be much better...makes sense also. Well an intake and spacers are coming soon...

also he said if I add an intake I'll be running lean with the current settings

I think my numbers are just average. I was expecting 240whp but atleast my tq is good. Runfile #9 seems to be the best

I think I know why your numbers are not better. I think it has something to do with 3.5 liking to be on rich side at higher rpms. I think you might need to dip into low to mid 12s starting at 5.5k-redline. Could also be the dyno. You really need an intake as it actually helps on 6th gens.

charts would be nice. if you have the runfiles like the title says, put them in winpep and post an image up here. those numbers are pretty useless in that form.

Its not me who tuned its the shop. I can kinda see theres slightly more room for improvement..Im going to retune once I get an intake and the intake spacers. I better be making some damn decent numbers then

LRMAF, WBO2, GAB, take it to 6500RPM, use SAE CF. Price: $350-$400. Gains

Or I could do this instead of the GAB:

Ive always been bothered with intakes and I dont want to spend $350 for a real cold air intake so this is my plan...

I have a JWT popcharger filter cone thingy which attaches to the MAF directly. I figure I could buy a midpipe and attach it to the popcharger and have myself a nice WAI since the popcharger cone is damn big. So it will be bringing in warm air BUT the warm air will be greatly reduced before it reaches the engine due to the intake spacers. So temps will be cooler...I use just the WAI to suck in maximum air flow and the spacers keep it cool

How does this sound?

Seems like the cheaper way. I'd rather do it my way.

You'll still gain though, either way.

You can always do a custom real cai for pretty cheap. Orgullo has a write up. I'll be satisfied w/ similar numbers here in 3 weeks when i dyno. Ill just be happy to get the dammn thing tuned, my headers have been on for far too long w/o a tune. Dunno why i havent invested in a wideband.

OK I got a question that hopefully someone can answer. Is there any truth behind what that tuner specialist was talking about regarding the vafc2 reading off a different Map? Was he referring to the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) signal that the vafc2 uses compared to airfow % that other afcs use? He couldnt be referring to the tuning point maps right? Thats the only difference that could validate him saying the vafc2 is the "wrong unit for the maxima."

The specialist doesn't know he's talking about. Yes, it's PSI vs Afl%. But it still works. With that said, I'm sure this specialist did not take advantage of the 24 points like he should have.

you need to take your car somewere else, most dsm places kno alot about the safc and vafc cause they use them alot..thats were i took my car.

But your numbers arent bad, its hard to compare dyno numbers and charts that are done on diffrent dynos

Instead of trying to find a reputable place that supposedly knows what they're doing, why not educate yourself on the subject? This way you at least have a fighting chance of understanding they’re doing to your car.

I told the guy who dyno'd the car that I would add a berk on within the near future and he told me not to drive around with an intake for too long. Reason: since the car is already tuned for the specific mod-setup, adding an intake would make the car run lean ...any truth to that?

not really. it MIGHT make a small difference, but unless youre running nitrous and tuned on the very edge you wont hurt anything and probly wouldnt see any change in tuning needed

Tuner might have a point. But, in the end, there's only one way to find out.

so yea...hopefully I'll hit the 240whp mark with the addition of those 2 mods

TE's FTW!

Good luck on getting some better numbers after you make some adjustments/add mods. I hope to dyno tune next month myself without a wideband, I'm interested to see how it goes and just how disappointed I will be with the numbers

bumping this...

Adding a berk midpipe w/ jwt popcharger during the next few days after finals are done with...

Also, the dyno was done with heavy arse 6th gen max rims...any chance those hindered better dyno numbers? g35 ray's 19'' rims should be coming on soon...since those are lighter Im hoping for better numbers along with the new intake setup (I was on the stock intake/airbox when I dynod)

19’s have grater rotating mass than an 18, so even if it is lighter than the 18, it probably wont yield much better.

Another thing, if you’re going to go with lightweight wheels, go with 17” in order to compliment my first point. Basically, go all the way, or don’t go at all.

Also, are you using 24 ‘tuning’ points on your VAFCII? If not, I’d suggest doing so.

yep all 24 tuning points were used. I was thinking about some 17" ssr comps but I cant see myself dishing out $2000 for those if it includes tires or not. Any other alternatives for lightweight rims?

350Z track wheels or Altima SE-R rims. Track wheels usually sell for $700-900 and weigh 18lbs per wheel, I think.

I have a set of Motegei Traklite's 2.0. 17", 14.3lbs, 280$/wheel. I also have some Z33 Tracks, I like the Motegei's 'feel' better, and the Tracks 'look' better.

i ran better with only an intake, and blemished yokos (meaning i bought them at a cheaper price because of cosmetic blemishes) so idk if rims would really help much

Dyno'd two 5.5 gens today

idk everyone i knew with a 5th gen always went in with a berk intake and i felt a big difference when i had it on, and now they sell it with an AEM filter
go for it its only 150 shipped, u gotta call them tho

I've dyno'd with heavy wheels and light wheels. Almost seems to point to if you have LW wheels, you'll put down more power in a higher gear. Meaning the higher the gear, the higher your dyno with respect to wheel weight.

sweet...

Im looking to get these: http://edgeracing.com/wheels/5zigen/

Just not sure if I should go for a 17X7 or 17X8 and what offset? I just plan on swapping out my current tires to put on these

I did the calculations and Im only saving 30lbs by going lightweight...the tire is 24lbs + 16lbs for the rims = 40 combined. Isnt the weight for a stock rim/tire around 45lbs? I actually weighed my stock rims and they are 45 each..
