VQ35 SC : 426 hp @ 6000 & 387 ft-lb @ 5300

The following thread contains an itemized list of my mods. Mods thread here

The only change is the addition of RC550 injectors. OEM ECU is still caring for engine management and SAFC is used for fine tuning. It idles a bit rich at about 12.5:1, but other than that no start problems nor drivability issues at part-throttle (frankly I was surprised). I had no trouble tuning my WOT runs either. The attached "VQ35 on Boost vs. VQ35 on Juice" chart with AF shows a bit of lean condition early on, but I have since fixed that. Since I don't have cats, I thought my wideband and dyno wideband would read about the same, but my Innovate EUGO was reading about .1-.2 richer than that tail sniffer AF shown in the chart.

Quick mods list:

-VQ35 w/ VQ30 timing equipment
-V2 Vortech SC - 2.62" pulley
-Front Mount Intercooler
-5-speed VLSD
-True dual 2.5" exhaust

Max boost is 13 psi, at redline of course. As far as I could tell, there was no belt slip.

Best of 3 runs:

SAE:
426 hp @ 6000
387 ft-lb @ 5300

Uncorrected:
436 hp @ 6000
398 ft-lb @ 5300

Baseline vs. 13psi SC:

Note: Baseline did not include headers and true dual exhaust.

VQ35 on Boost vs. VQ35 on Juice

Green line: 130 N20 shot
Red line: 13 psi SC

I have been asked for dyno vids and exhaust clips. Well, I have finally made some time and uploaded a couple of the dyno pulls from my last trip to the dyno.

Video 1: Front of Car View with car strapped on dyno

Video 2: Driver’s side view. Sound of car when turned on and WOT exhaust sound from exterior.

Excuse the dyno operator’s commentary. He was dumbfounded as to why I had a blow off valve on a supercharged engine. This particular dyno run shows a lean condition early on, but it has since been fixed. I was targeting a 13:1 A/F at the 1-2 psi range and slowly decreasing to 11:1 at redline.

Video 3: Exhaust sound inside car Some of you wanted to hear what my exhaust sounds like inside the car. This vid on the dyno was taken inside inside the car, 3 of 4 doors open, and zoomed in on boost gauge.

Quick highway pull, a bit a throttle feathering when in 3rd gear (to avoid spinning) and finally a WOT punch in 4th....enjoy

Very nice dyno. I see you max out on power at around 6000 rpm's. I wonder if the belt is slipping or the impeller is maxing out at that speed.

I am very impressed.

You need an emanage to control the timing.

I am not sure that I need, but it could definitely help with fuel and timing control. To my very limited knowledge, I believe that the VQ30s stock timing curve on a VQ35 seems very apt for boost. The combination of 93octane, 1-step colder iridium plugs, huge FMIC, and J&S are working well in unison to preclude detonation.

E-manage could greatly aid in fuel management, especially to scale down my RC550cc injectors. Surprisingly, the stock ECU, Z32 MAF, FMU, and SAFC are doing shockingly well for my fuel management; evident in the smooth AF line shown in the “VQ35 on Boost vs. VQ35 on Juice” chart above.

The trans is still in one piece partly due the smooth ramping of torque as opposed to the instantaneous 150 torque hit with nitrous. I suppose that the involuntary tire spinning helps as well. I am almost certain that I will be disintegrating gears once I get some stickier rubber.

What fmu disk are you using and does the J&S sense any knock or is it quiet?

?? Nitrous curve ??

Not that anybody probably noticed, but the N2O curve seems very erratic compared to the NA and boost curves, and showed only 100 HP improvement, and I think you said you sprayed a 130-shot on that pull? Anyway, the N2O curve was ... strange..... Maybe your tires slipped or spun on the rollers?

That's a group of HP from your 3.5, any way you slice it. Those numbers give me a chill - pretty frickin' impressive, dude. Planning on some track time soon?

I am using a 4:1 disk and J&S does not detect any knock at all. I have adjusted J&S knock detection to a really sensitive state, and at that point it just picks up engine noise all over the place.

Prior to the SC setup and the colder plugs, I used regular fuel to fine tune J&S knock sensitivity on my VQ35. Even with 87 octane, I would only pick up the ocassional knock at WOT...great way to save on fuel costs

Hmmmmmm….no. The cross-sectional area for a single 3” pipe is a mere 7.07 in^2 while my two 2.5” pipes tally up to 9.8 in^2. Furthermore, most after-market y-pipes and headers have a 2" manifold collectors, or 2.25" at best. I can't imagine that a pair of 2" header collectors are good for anything over 300 hp, much less anything pushing the 500 bhp mark.

I was told that for my displacement, 3" header collectors and dual 2.5" pipes would cause too much tq loss because of poor scavenging effect, low exhaust velocity, blah, blah, blah. Even with the Z33 manifold (which provides less tq than the A33 intake), I still managed to squeeze 300 wtq at 3800rpm, and 350 wtq by 4500rpm....so much for a torque deficiency.

...or did you mean dual 3" pipes? I know of a couple 350z with 3" duals, all with built motors and boosting way more than me. Now that would be overkill for my set up.

Just in case you missed them:

Custom 3” header collector to a 2.5” pipe

X-pipe and Wideband O2 bung

Poorly created panoramic view of my exhaust….

Amazing work meximax, all the power to ya. Have you considered relocating the tips to in front of the rear wheel well, to eliminate those two 90* bends? Essentially a dual side exhaust?

That setup needs an aftermarket engine management system. You could yeild more power and do it safer than with that Safc and an FMU.
