i used sil glyde on anything rubber ie. hoses, boots, hard and soft plastics, metal on lower battery tray, had some rust, cleaned and applied a thin coat with my nitrile gloves, makes it easier to work into and cleans all in one step. could you some paper towel or a throwaway shirt to get excess dirt/oil/smuck off. makes the engine bay look clean, esp w/ new valve covers!
did the front/underside/black proctective covers, cv boots, brake caliper boots, anything rubber or plastic that get exposed to harsh environments.
used dielectric grease for all electrical couplings, harness, batt and basically anything with a voltage rating, electrical wiring, connections etc. also cleaned the terminals and applied some grease over both.
there's a funky smell, think it the sil glyde but everything that i touched is weatherized for at least a few years??
i'd stay away from directly spraying any forced water directly into the bay, but that just my opinion. thinks there are way too many electrical connections, components and other items that may fry w/ h2o. maybe just clean some lite cleaner/degreaser in bucket w/ old rags. wet rags and wipe w/ as 95vq30 said, with elbow grease.

You can go to your local autozone or pepboys and pick this up. you wanna make sure your engine is cool to do this though. i would prefer you to go to a car wash and do it there because once you rinse off the whole engine, all of the grease and nastiness will come off to the ground and stain it.
hope this helped, have fun cleanin your engine

You can use Megs degreaser or local kerosene that is diluted with water.
You should first warm the engine and shut if off. Make sure to cover all the electronic parts like stater, alternator etc. Than rinse with water and spray some degreaser. Have a lot of mf towel and brush to scrub off the dirt.
Rinse and use a leaf blower to dry and spray some protectant.

Warm engine, saturate everything with cleaner, agitate greasy areas.
Rinse thoroughly, repeat if necessary.
Blow dry with a leaf blower and towel off the rest.
Apply your favorite dressing to hoses and plastic.
