Hood spots! What are they, and what to do?

Hello everyone and thanks for reading this. Below is a pic of some spots I have on my hood. These have been there for several years - I believe they are areas where the clearcoat was eaten away but I am not sure. I am wondering if someone can confirm what kind of paint damage this is, and additionally I am curious if there's any alternative to a repaint to help get rid of these spots? Thanks a lot!

Looks like what you're saying is right.

I would get the color code for your paint and then order a touchup paint pen. I got mine from AutomotiveTouchup and it works great. I didn't get the clear coat though so it's not perfect, but I'm thinking about going to PepBoys or somewhere similar to get some of the clearcoat.

thanks for the reply & I appreciate the suggestion but i stay far-far away from touch up paint. Id much rather look at the spots I have on there than some brutally ugly touch-up job

Believe me, if done properly, the touch-up paint is going to look better than those dark spots.

+1, Most people just don't know how to use it...

Touch up, clear, wetsand, rubbing compound, polish, wax

i would say away from pens, at least i had a hard time getting them to match. I would buy touch up spray cans. I have used without any experience painting and did a good job on my pearl white bumpers.

Spray cans probably would work better because it would be more of an even coat, whereas with the pens, you chance getting lines.

it's going to be hard to get a spray can to be very exact on spots as small as that. Just get the damn front end repainted...

You can get touch up paint pens from any autozone, advance auto, or O'Riley type store for around 6 bucks. I wouldn't bother with ordering one and paying shipping unless it is dirt cheap. Just figure out your color (for example mine is CG2 or sand pebble beige) and look for it on the pen.

Correct me if I'm wrong (witch I could be), but if you custom order your paint pen from a company, you're telling them the year of your car so they make that paint specifically for that year (adjusting for fade, etc. that happens over the years).

No. You can't really adjust for fade because everyone treats their cars differently and lives in different climates. The company can't possibly know how much you car will be faded. Some people can keep their paint looking show room quality while others do good just to keep the clear coat intact.
