i see a small window inside the ashtray when its open but there is no light at night, i am thinking the bulb needs to be replaced, would i have to just take out the piece thats around the shifter ?
and what do i do if my hazard button doesnt light up as well ? can i change the bulb or do i need the whole new button ?

I believe the bulbs to both are #74 bulbs. You can just put led's in there as I redid my whole interior with led's so they all work just like before, but brighter. No need to buy a whole new unit.

Just replaced my hazard button lamp with a white LED. The lamp i took out seemed fine so i dont know why it did not work (ie when checking a bulb if the strings are connected its fine if not then its burnt) but the LED works perfectly.
Replaced the rear defroster button lights with LEDs as well (mine worked fine just wanted to have more consistency), when I turn the defroster on, the little led beside it turns on but its SOOOooo bright, i ALMOST dont like it, but we'll see tomorro night if it actually interfeers with my driving.
Also replaced the ashtray light with an LED, mine was not working before, but now its nice and bright, i dont smoke, so when i take out the unner insert for the ash it looks even brighter.
This was tricky but very doable, I cannot stress enough for people to TAKE their time and be careful when removing all the parts from the dash and the actual buttons. Looks great and im happy to have my buttons working finally!

I think they all light up.
I'm going to get 3mm LEDs and try to change the bulb inside my 4th gen rear defrost switch. This, along with the auto climate control buttons (auto/econ/off) burnt when I disassembled my dash to change my head unit. Grrrrrrr.
Would've disconnected the neg terminal on the battery prevented this?

yes there's a light inside the ash tray and yes the hazard button lights up as well.
