My experience at west can auto parts

so i go into west can looking for gl-4 80w90 or 75w90 gear oil, and i couldn't find any on the wall, so i asked the guy at the till. He walks over to the wall grabs one, and brings it up to the front to ring me in. I ask him, is that gl-4, he sais no it's gl-5 it's one up from gl-4, better in every aspect. I told him that that was not the case for my application, i need gl-4.even when i explained why, he just kept telling me that gl-5 was better, then he walks over to the shelf, puts it back and says have fun finding gl-4 elsewhere. Why does no one in town carry gl-4 tranny fluid? and do companies even make just gl-4 oil? or can you only get a synthetic that is appropriate for gl-4?

GL-4 is still out there, but it is hard to find. When I was at a dealership I tried to get some in, and had a hell of a time. In most cases the GL-5 would replace the GL-4, except for the additive for the soft metal syncros (which is what the Max needs). Red Line makes a synthetic GL-4 but it is quite expensive. Penzoil still makes it - http://www.pennzoil.com/products/gea...lus8090g4.html. & Amsoil - http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/mtg.aspx. It seems that Quaker State & Castrol have stopped selling it.

Thanks to a call from Bobo one day, I did a bit of research.

Good luck.

Go to mrlube, they sell quaker state 75w90 gl4, you have to get them to do it as they wont sell it to you, but yeah its like 65$ and they dispose of the old fluid for you. Last time i checked, which was about 3-4 weeks ago they still carried the quaker state 75w90 GL-4.

amsoil also makes a synthetic gl-4 oil , it's what I use in my max. I've tried the redline and the amsoil, amsoil is better in the cold.

And what is really crazy is the dealerships use mobil 1, it's a gl-5. And when I asked mobil one about whether it could be used in a gl-4 application they said no. So be careful if you go to a dealership because they may be using the wrong stuff as it is very hard to find.

I got Redline MT-90 (it's GL-4) and it's totally worth it. If you have a 4th gen it might cost you a bit because it takes something like 5 quarts I think. The 5.5 gen (6spd) takes only 3 quarts, so it's not so bad. I got it at a local shop in London, ON and I think it cost me something like $13 a quart.

I heard good things about Amsoil too.
