low tranny fluid or bad tranny?

hey guys,
just thought I'd ask here before getting flamed for another auto tranny thread in the 4th gen forums.

Anyways My tranny has been getting worse and worse latley but now when at idle while waiting at a light it slips out of gear and when I go to apply throttle it rolls back as if in neutral then slams into gear quite harshly. This is when I leave it in drive. it gets stuck in neutral if i ever put it neutral....

i need help here

when was the last time that the fluid has been changed. Dropped the pan and done properly?

The only "proper" way to change the fluid is to have it flushed, otherwise almost half the old fluid stays in the convertor.

I sounds as though it is more than a fluid problem.

I had exactly the same symptoms back in 2005. Don't bother with a tranny flush. When the gears are starting to slip its a bad sign of band slippage. It cost me $3,000.00 for a tranny rebuild.

If you're able to locate where my totalled Max went to swapping trannies will be the cheapest route.

Yea. I might look into it. but if the junkyard theives want the same amount for an auto as for a 5 speed. Id rather get a 5 speed and do the whole swap. I know locating alot of the parts is tough, but to me worth it

160,000 is the usual time of death, from what I hear. I know that was where I was at with my 3rd gen. (and having tranny problems) when I traded up.

no indication it has been changed? how about checking the fluid??? that will tell you if it is low and/or old. You will also see bits in the fluid if you have serious damage down there.

Sounds like your having problems that a flush wont fix. Reasong being, once it starts to slip its pretty much done, the damage has been done on the clutches and it will only get worse.

Your best bet is to rebuild this one before it gets too bad. Buying a used auto tranny is a gamable, well buying any used tranny is. We send our transmissions to benz transmission in coquitlem they seem to do good work, i think it usually ends up for a full rebuild in the ~1700-2000 range.

If your interested ill get there number and you can see what they can do for you.

What? Are you serious? Our tranny only last up to 160,000?

That seems to be the commen Kms. It may differ depending on the servicing that they receive. I know it sucks, one of the reasons I got a 5yr - 100,000 kms warrenty when I bought my 5th gen., though I hoped they had worked through the problem.

update, it looks as if the fluid is fine. but I pulled a code and my speed sensor is bad. 0104. could this cause the tranny to act irratic?

Good luck! I don't profess to know much about automatic trannies, given mine is a 5-speed. I believe the transmission fluid should have been changed at 48k, flushed at 96k and replaced again at 144k.

I question how many times the fluid has been changed.

If it is the sensor that is causing the problem, service the tranny anway with a complete flush and fluid replacement.

Wow, I am having the same exact problem. I have 236,000 miles on mine. I Hope you find a Cheaper solution than a tranny replace :-(

The VSS could cause problems. Id definatlely replace it. I know in the manual transmissions it can be removed with the tranny in the car but its like press fitted in there so its hard. Im not sure on the auto's though.

You know whats funny. My 02 SE, its tranny started slipping at about 102,000kms. Slips on the 2-3 shift, and the 1-2 shift is kinda abrupt at times. Sucks cuz it was just out of the 5yr/100 powertrain. Flushed the fluid didnt help.

There are TSB's for the 2-3 shift solenoid and or TCM. But because its been slipping for awhile (the car has 116KM) the clutches have probably been damaged and frankly the 2-3 shift solenoid and TCM are for 00-01 models not the 02-03 even though they use the same auto tranny from 95-03(RE4F04A/V).

Some with 00-03 have replaced the solenoids + TCM to no avail, im just going to keep driving it till it blows, then ill decide what i want to do.

UPDATE!!! Maybe this will help you. I remembered that I re-oiled my k&n When I did a tune up a few months back. I did some research and decieded to go to the parts store and pick up a can of MAF senson cleaner....And guess what! That fixed my problem completly! I will prob. replace the MAF later on and get a non oiled air filter too. Hope that helps

the intake system has no effect on the issues im having with my transmission. It found out that my speed sensor is dead but due to the winter weather we are having here I havent done much work on my car since.

Yea, I didnt bother posting updates because its gotten worse.

I picked up a new speed sensor and that got rid of the CEL but the transmission had no difference. I swapped the TCM with a 95 TCM and I noticed that the dropping out of gear when idling stopped but i lost my gear 3 and 4. Eventually it started dropping out of gear again and slipping so i put my 96 TCM back in which was just the same as before. at this point all im willing to do is a full tranny flush along with getting a minor rebuild kit, the one that nissan has that comes with the pan gasket and new screens.

Aside from this I have a 95 transmission that worked well that I am planning on putting in in about 2 weeks when my insurance runs out. that way i dont feel bad about leaving my car sitting around for a bit. eventually a 5 speed will come if this auto doesnt work.

on a good note my car averaged 32+ mpg on the sea to sky on saturday when I headed up for a beautiful day of boarding

That isn't a long enough run to adequately determine your gas mileage.

I have never recorded 32 mpg on a round trip to Whistler, consequently I question the accuracy of the reading.

Sorry to hear, IMO you'ld be pissin' in the wind to do a fluid change-get on with your 5 speed swap. Other wise you'll be wasting time and money.
