Need some amp advice for subs

So, my son was given a pair of Audiobahn 1051T subs mounted in a ported box. Thing is, now he needs an amp for them. Can't spend a lot of cash, though. Not looking for Earth-crushing sound. Just some good, respectable bumping.

Looking around online has completely confused me. Price ranges for amps are all over the board and I can't really tell what I'm looking at. Do I get a mono amp? Would I need two mono amps? I was told by a Crutchfield rep that the subs being dual 4-ohm units complicates things. They wanted to sell us two mono amps for almost $300. That's more than the budget allows.

So, if you were a kid on a tight budget and had these subs land in your lap, how would you go about powering them?

10" Dual 4 Ohms Natural Sound Subwoofer

Power Handling:
  • Peak: 600 watts
  • RMS: 300 watts
Impedance: Dual 4 Ohms
These are the specs of your subs(got them online). The numbers that are most important are the watts of RMS(continous power, usually half of max)
Two mono's are an ideal setup, but not necessary you can get a 1000-1200 watt max class a/b(2channel amp) amplifier and would do great. Good Luck!

Thanks.
We were thinking of wiring the subs in a series/parallel configuration, such as this, which would seem to maintain a 4-ohm impedance at the amp. Do you think a single mono amp such as this one would work well for this? It's specs shows 500w RMS @ 4-ohms. Or do you think it's overpowered for the subs?

ok if you have 2 dual coil subs its just like having 4 subs. if you wire them in parallel you can get a 1 ohm mono load. just find you a 1 ohm mono amp and your good. the lanzar amps have a very good bang for the buck status. i ran them a few years in comps and they worked very well. if you need any help just drop me a pm.

So...would I necessarily need to include capacitors in the install? Or is such a thing reserved mainly for the big, high-powered installations? The subs and amps are going into a bone-stock '97 Jetta.

i personally dont use caps and i have had 10000 watt systems. if you are pulling that much current you need more alts and extra batteries. in your case i do not feel you would need a cap. at the most upgrade the battery to the largest you can fit in your tray.

I would go with 4 ohm. Many amps to find. Its hard to find a good cheap 1 ohm stable amp. Dual voice coil just gives you more wiring options. 1 ohm will sound better, but on a budget, a nice 600w @ 4 ohm class d mono block amp should do. With a budget, ebay is awesome.

You can run 10 subs on 1 amp if you want.. you dont need one amp per sub... it all comes down to how you wire the subs together.. this link should be helpful http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/wo...s.asp?Q=4&I=81
