3.5 SWAP ??

3.5 SWAP ??
This is gonna be my progress thread, so i can give back to the community.
so ill be getting my components for a swap very soon, the donor car is a 2004 max, but i'm planning on doing the full ecu/e-gas setup. i am currently a 5 spd if i go with the 6spd ecu does it have to be from an '04?

Jime dropped an 04 engine into his A32 but used A33B software (02-03). I would suggest you do the same since the A34 is a different beast, electronically.

The autos have CAN. The manuals dont. OP, is the donor car a auto? if it is then yes you will need a 6sp ecu. Also keep in mind that you will need the ecu, key & nats all from the same car if your planning on doing the full swap.

the donor car is an auto, but what you're saying is that the ECU & NATS have to be from the same car? the 6 pd ecu wont work with this then?

update!!!
sourcing my parts from an 03 canadian 6spd, getting all the wiring and extras.
1st question- will i be able to switch to a US AUTO guage cluster (MPH) without issue from the ECU, or will i be ok?

Dont use a 6th gen ECU...way way to much trouble. just get an 02-03. For the record you only need the matching key and ECU. The nats doesnt have to come from the same car...it just picks up the transponder in the key and sends that info to the ECU. As long as the key is programmed to the ECU everything will work just fine.
I got my engine from an 05 but eveything else came from a 2002.

Yeah thats fine. The 02-03 didnt used external EGR like the 6th gen did. You need to get an EGR block off plate or source a intake manifold from a 02-03 and swap it over.

tell her you goin to vegas

lmao....yeah...that will work
Im still waiting to hear back from the machine shop on the timing rings....they are a little more than slow....arg.
Do you already have a flywheel from a manuel 3.5? You are going to need one so that you can grind off the welds on the timing ring and separate the ring from the flywheel.

Yes and no. If you are using your 2000 5 speed then you will use the same flywheel that you have now (you have to to use your tranny..the VQ35 flywheel wont work with your tranny). In order to do the full swap you will need the timing ring from a VQ35 flywheel (This has to be from a manuel flywheel!! You cant use an auto flex plate timing ring). Unfortunately on the VQ35, the timing ring doest bolt on to the flywheel like a 95-01 flywheel, it is welded to the VQ35 stock flywheel.
Thats why you have to get an adaptor plate machined. The timing ring that you cut off the VQ35 flywheel is welded to the adaptor plate that is then bolted to your current flywheel. Follow??? This does two things, first...obviously it allows it to "bolt on" to your current flywheel. Secondly, it spaces the ring out so that the VQ35 crank positioning sensor can read it properly. This is the ONLY custom piece needed to do the FULL swap (other than the harness obviously). And this is only needed if you dont plan on installing a 6 speed tranny and want to use a 4th or 5th gen tranny with the VQ35.
Im still working on my machine shop....they havent been the most reliable in getting back to me....they do good work but are incredibly busy (I know the owner and use him for my side business...but whenever I take him one off work it takes an eternity lol).

okay...
So I am now in possession of a 2002 Altima 6 speed. Blown motor (which is fine) that has JWT cams installed!! And a complete interior so far I've pulled most of the under dash components, but I just came across a bump. The steering column and ignition ARE SEPERATE from each other,so it looks like modification will be needed.
I'm trying to source a new wiring harness cause some of the connections are damaged. I'll post pics soon.

Stop right there. Dont use any of the wiring from the altima 3.5. I was going to go this route but quickly realized it was a bad idea. It's pretty much the same thing as a 6th gen setup.
#24
The 2002 and 2003 altima and maxima 6spd ECUs don't have CAN. Avoid the newer ECUs. But if I were doing a swap right now, I'd use the 2008+ Altima engine which is basically an HR motor.

02-03
The altima engine harness of these years are completely different from 02-03 maximas, I have both of them sitting in front of me. A lot of the information about the full swap on the org portrays it being more difficult than it really is because people try to use altima wiring assuming that its the same.

My 02-03 Altima engine harness..

My 02-03 Maxima engine harness... (picture is from the seller's thread)
Notice that the maxima harness only has what you need to run engine functions on the harness. (ecu plug, injectors, coilpacks, vtc, maf, etc) While the altima one has this, plus connections for the starter, etc. These connections are built into the front engine room harness with the fuse boxes and gets routed into the cabin and connects to the dash harness. Not to mention that the altima dash harness is completely different also.

update #4
JWT cams are out, but they have some surface rust will i be able to do some LIGHTLIGHTsanding or can i leave them as they are?
next...
what are my options for oil pumps, the motor is an 04 so i dont think burning oil will be an issue, but i figure since i am there....

My motor is a 2005 and it ended up having oil burning issues until I put HR pistons and rings in it. 04 pistons and rings are no different that 02-03. They weren't changed until 2007.
The Rev-up 350z/G35 oil pump is stronger than your stock one.

Leave them as they are. The cam buckets are harder than the rust and will wear it down where it needs to be.

The stock water pump lasts forever. The 350z thermostat is colder and I would use it for racing and track use, but forget it for a daily driver, esp. in a colder climate.
