1st Fully Built 5.5Gen - NA

I guess the time has come for me to post this thread. The only thing I'm waiting on at the moment is for the new Wilwood calipers to come in so I have some brakes to stop this thing. Will start her up for the first time with the new motor as soon as that happens this week or early next week. I was hoping to start her this past Thursday, but the brake bleeding issue prevented that from happening.

I built this motor in my garage along with major assistance from SR20DEN (Matt - The VQ Wizard) since January. Should have been done in February, but got held up at the machine shop who was hand porting my heads.

The only thing left out of the equation on initial startup is the Deatschwerks 380cc Injectors, 3" Maf, and Utec Tuning. Will start it up and break-in the motor with the stock ecu and run her for about 1500 miles initially. I will then go to the dyno and tune her and add the above items. Will probably be dynoing the 350z/G Revup and Non-Revup manifold during this time as well to see what gains could be had.

There will be a few videos in different stages that I'll be posting up, so stay tuned in this thread. I have a stash of photos through this 5 month build so just ask if you'd like to see anything in particular.

So my goal for this build is to push as much power as I can out of the stock block, Naturally Aspirated. No rules involved here except for using a VQ35DE stock block (same one that comes in the car) and no Forced Induction....ie, Supercharger, Turbo, or Nitrous. If I break 300+ whp All Motor, I'll be a happy camper. On to the goodies.......

i would have like to see some more aggressive cams thou, some 272s or 280s, that would have made for an interesting idle.

I don't remember why, but there was a good reason I didn't go that big. It will come to me, but my midrange on up should be very nice and linear. We'll see what the dyno says.

That's what they say, but it's never happened before, in a Maxima as far as I can recall.

Looks like a pretty solid build. I think you should go with some bigger cams though. 0.426" lift is pretty weak. I think you should get some custom ground cams with around 0.500" lift. You'll make some serious power then.

Not to make this a cam discussion thread, but the cam angle should be looked at as both a ramp & peak lift vs just a peak value. So, the second derivative applies (A change within a change re: cam angle, vs a huge spike/lift ... )

Anyhow.

Congrats. Should turn 300+whp. There was a 350z with the same cams and 315whp.

Looking forward to seeing the numbers on this! The lift only matters so much on a multi-valve motor anyways, the duration is what is going to make it pull like a raped ape upstairs..

I just wanted to stay below 12.0:1 so I can have the street ability of using pump gas as well without any detonation problems and having to run race gas the whole time to solve it. With the headgaskets, milled deck heads, and block I should be able to yield closer to 11.3:1 or 11.5:1. We'll see what the final CR is soon.

At 12:1 I am always going to run premium and we are pulling a lot of timing out of the tune to run on pump gas, but I won't be running pump gas all that often, only when I am just leisurely cruising around in the Probe..so..it can be done, but I agree it is/will be a pain!

Ever think of having custom longtubes made?

50/50 at the moment. Just gotta see how my schedule goes around that time. Would love to make it to my 1st ever Maxus though.

Honestly......I'm afraid to add it all up. I could have probably gone FI with a 1/3 built motor I'm sure.

I'd like to go a little heavy on the timing as well now that I have forged pistons. She's always had 93 or better since I've had her, but I'm anxious to see what she will do with a 100+ octane tune. Luckily, I can set a map for that too.
